The banks that were negatively impacted in 2008 fall into two overlapping groups. There are banks that gave loans to people without enough collateral or enough possible future income growth make the increasing payments. This is a regulatory issue that the federal government shares much of the blame for. It was their regulatory requirements and monetary policy that set that up.
Then there were banks that bought way too many financial products that had risky or insolvent assets as the underlying. Now the fault for this is partly on the banks and partly on the regulators.

Anyway, at a certain point shit hits the fan, and the government has to make a choice: step in and fix things, to try and keep the economy together, keep people in their houses and employed , OR to do nothing and have everything fall apart. The reality is the government waited too long to intervene after the problem was apparent.
That's 2008. Now your other leg of the comparison is some random person gambling their money on the stock market. This person IS NOT a bank making federally regulated loans to help people buy houses, this person is a speculator or investor. If they lose all their money, that means they were a speculator. If they lose all their money, the economy keeps running, no one loses their job or their house
