Backyard fabrication is fun. You can make all kinds of shit and build the machines yourself, mills, lathes, plasma cutters, all cnc. 3d printing is a meme though, but you can make your own parts for other shit if you like the idea of being a "maker". No one will pay you for shitty 3d printed parts. Why would they? Injection molding is retardedly cheap. Are you going to chase the business of broke virgins that want one or two flimsy plastic figurines to show their faggot friends?

>> No.15843841

>>15843348
That's the point, it all seems a retarded version of the real industry.
Or no one achieved to figure out a working business model about it.

Broke virgin here. The plastic figurines I buy are far beyond the capabilities of a shitty 3D printer.

yeah, actually.
My son and I designed some fidget spinners, printed them all out and he sold them at school.
Didnt get rich, but it paid for the printer.
It has since paid for itself twice over with all the repairs and useful shit Ive made with it.

>> No.15843897

Developing new printing technologies is profitable if you can afford it.

Using the printers is not.

>> No.15843956

>>15843880
They are definitely not. Maybe you could pull off some really cheap crappy stuff, like army men. Not saying it isn't possible once the technology develops further, but as of right now, no way. They suck for fine details.

>> No.15843965

>>15843891
Yes ok, i mean, you like a lot printing and you find it useful and handy, definitely it's good for printing spare parts for several objects you can't find anywhere.

But i mean something ACTUALLY profitable, with which you can start a solid business, even investing on an expensive printer (let's say 3-4 grands)

>> No.15843969

>>15843205
more important imo is the question how fucking unhealthy it must be to constantly breathe in microscopic parts of melted plastic when working with one (or even a farm)

>> No.15844074

>>15843969
I think you don't need to stare at the printing all the time, and if you set up a serious lab, there are vacuums

>> No.15844663

>>15843965
Probably not. They are too fucking slow. Even the UV ones. Slow and very hands on.
Depending on what you are doing, youd be better off with a vacuum mold.. or hell, even laser or cnc.

What's the point then, printing your own useless plastic things? This is lame.

The secret to 3D printing is that it's a tool, and like most tools are only limited by the imagination of the user.

You can make molds with 3D printers for investment casting, autoclave, whatever your heart desires. That's just a small sample of the manufacture side. You can make money off of just prints as well.

Or you can do something completely different.

I have worked professionally with 3D printers for years. Honestly unless you are a jeweler or engaged in niche 3D printing such as sintered metal printers like Shapeways is, or working for a crazy rare aerospace application like making turbine blades, don't bother. It's highly profitable for jewelers because with a competent 3D modeler you can print in wax for lost wax casting. On that note you also have to be an expert with 3d modeling or employ someone who is. I am lucky that I am also a 3D modeler but I couldn't imagine having a 3D printing business and not knowing the other basic tools necessary for its use.

You could print out a cookie cutter in the time it takes you to go to the store and buy the ingredients and make a cookie dough. bought a 3d printer 4 years ago or so. The idea was that i could print things to use, personal usage, e.g if i needed a hammer or a screwdriver, then i could print one.
The first problem is that the material is frail as fuck, it is difficult to print anything useable because it will fracture, for instance when i got the printer a smaller component was broken, the component broken was the only part of the printer that was actually 3d printed by a similiar printer.
So with the printer i had, i could only print figurines and shit, nothing useable could be printed. (Perhaps today it is different, and perhaps if you spend more money the printing material will improve).
second problem is that the templates for what to print is cumbersome and time consuming to create, it is not easy at all. The already available templates on websites etc. are scarce. This greatly limits the potential usage of a 3d printer, desu it is more likely that you can earn money designing 3d templates and selling them, instead of printing it.

3d printers for metal are available but they're VERY expensive. Specialist businesses use them to produce expensive lightweight components (that are difficult or impossible to make any other way) to other manufacturers. But it's way too expensive to use for consumer products.
