Lads I'm lazy and investing is a hassle. Can I just buy Vanguards S&P 500 etf and hold on to it for like 5 years?

Yes but more like 10-20 years.

This. But invest like 55% into Vangaurd's emerging market index.

Wait 20-30 years and beat the S&P by a significant amount.

5 years is too short of a window to invest in the S&P 500; you'll need at least 10 years minimum to safeguard against a potential recession. Also consider if you employer matches contributions to your 401k.

>> No.1581180

>>1581168
Not really. Malkiel has been advocating this for years and the math checks out (basically, you reduce risk in volatile markets by holding indices for long periods of time).

>> No.1581182

>>1581177
My employer doesn't do 401k matching. They do have a profit sharing trust but that's only for employees who've been there awhile

>> No.1581187

>>1581183
I suppose that they could be if one considered them individually, but with a diversified (indexed) portfolio you can limit your risk.

Plus the topic doesn't come up TOO often here and even when it does it's based mostly on individual markets.

That sucks. Keep in mind that most of Vanguard's stuff has a minimum first-time contribution limit (I think it's usually 3-10k minimum to contribute into an IRA). Otherwise they're great and have cheap upkeep fees.

>> No.1581196

>>1581190

That's why I'm thinking ETFs they didn't have minimum contributions iirc

>> No.1581202

>>1581196
ETFs can be good, but they usually have higher upkeep costs and can be poorly managed.

I'm personally saving up for a Vanguard emerging market buy while feeding the few indices that my employer offers (my employer also matches a whopping $100 annually so I have that going for me, I guess).

I should note that I have the added benefit of not getting penalized if I want to take out my investment early.

Your benefits aren't awful. My SO's employer matches 100% up to some crazy amount. She makes a lot but she invests in government (US) bonds and specific companies though. Her investments hardly cover inflation.

I just dropped into /biz/ for the first time and this doesn't make a bit of sense to me. When the overwhelming majority of businesses and startups fail how does diversifying your portfolio do anything but increase your chance at also losing out?

It's just a fact. Over time, the S&P index has increased over time. If you invest in a index fund that tracks it, you'll (almost) guaranteed good returns over time.

this person is right and wrong.

if you have to ask about timing the market. you don't have the experience or knowlege to do it effectively. then no...
ofc.

if you are an economic veteran ,then you would know the ONLY time to buy stocks, is after a crash, because crashes are inevitable, sudden, and devastating, especially if you are leveraged.

while ur waiting for the crash. you should deal in commodities and bonds.

stocks are not for holding. you want to get in and out, unless you are a CEO or something.

>> No.1582216

>>1582175
>Should I wait for a crash before buying?

You could be waiting... a long long long time.

The market was "due for a crash" 200-300 points ago. I'm sure you could've waited and missed out on all those gains too.

if you knew anything about the current market. you would know the market has purely been seeing gains dependant on the rise of the price of oil. ergo. buy oil now.hold. when markets crash its gonna be fucked. it might not recover.
us will probably become an islamic state unless china intervenes which is a more likely scenario.

and when i say recover . i mean return to the peak index price as you have been accustomed to only this year , and in 2007 .

its not gonna be the end of the world, just the end of ur joyful ride on the index train .
