I think organized religion is subject to the same ills as organized government systems, and that religion should evolve with us as most systems should. I believe the mormon church to have fallen ill to both not evolving with new spiritual knowledge, and to becoming a system unto itself, so I dont support it. Your correct though that people become militant towards outsiders, and I believe that is largely because religions turn into systems as I mentioned. It makes sense when you consider religion has become a system where the laws of the religion have become stringent so you are considered heretical if you step outside of the boundaries rather then doing your own thinking of what the teachings mean and how you can best apply them in your own life.
