A man who owns a small antique shop contacted me with some photos of a piece he had recently been consigned (I’m purposely omitting details of what it is because it’s very specific/niche). He asked me for some input on value and if I would be interested in buying it.

From the photos I thought it was genuine but wasn’t positive, so I sent them to an expert and he concurred that it looked fine but would need to handle it in person.

I drove to the shop and we didn’t discuss value. We talked a little bit about the piece but he did not ask if it was authentic and I didn’t offer an opinion. I asked him “What amount would make your consignor happy?” And he answered “$400.” I wrote a check and now own it.

To make a long story short, I’ve now been offered 100k for it. I’m frightened that if the antique dealer becomes aware (or the consignor), they will sue me. I never offered an opinion on value or authenticity and they set the price. Am I paranoid for nothing?

Yes. If they set the price and you didn't influence their decision, then it's not fraud.

Its worth -$400 if you dont sell it you doofus.
It just sounds like the poor antiques dealer really shouldn't be in the business.

It’s not your fault that guy was a dumbass. You legally bought on an agreed amount. Nothing that guy can do now. Maybe wait a month or two to sell if you are that worried. But how would that guy even know you sold it it?

>be seller
>inherit some "junky" antique from grandma
>sell it for some chump change on consignment

>be antique dealer
>find a buyer for an item
>get a percentage for a quick turn around

>be OP
>figure out that the antique he bought was valuable

>be person buying it from OP
>resell it to a wealthy collector for a sizeable markup

Everybody hustles. That's the market. Be grateful that you're looking at such a large margin.

lol you fucked that guy good. Just do your research on scams and make sure the guy buying it from you doesn't need your bank account info to send you the money or something.

I don't think so, OP. How would they know though? I've done something similar. They would be upset, but it was a trade

For 100k you better get creative if you know what I mean

As long as this guy has no written proof or video proof or audio proof that you were giving him an expert appraisal of value i think your just fine.

And even if he did i think he would still have a weak case.
