Any aussies had any experience buying Aussie junk silver? Like the 50% silver sixpences?

I've got Perth Mint silver coins and bars, but thinking of buying junk silver too.

I crunched the numbers once on a few ebay listings and came to the conclusion that the pre-decimal stuff costs way too much over spot.

In that listing you're buying just under half an ounce for $19. Way too much if you're just after silver.

If you want junk silver go for the 1966 50c piece.

Is Perth Mint coins best then? Or is there a better way?

idk they look pretty expensive too

The 1966 50c has about a third of an ounce iirc and pop up on ebay all the time for between $10 - $12.
It's still a little pricey but as far as i'm aware its the best australian junk you can get.

Yea seems to check out: https://www.kjc-gold-silver-bullion.com.au/PD/1966-australian-50-cent-silver-rounds--80-25-/292

At $12 tho they're a bit more expensive than the Perth Mint coins, so idk if it's worth it. Are there any advantages to junk silver over bullion coins?

Honestly for australians i don't think there's much advantage. Having denominations lower than 1oz might be handy if we ever have a SHTF scenario and we have to barter with silver but i don't think its a good idea to buy old coins for well over spot just in case the world ends.

Problem is that our junk has a slight historical/collector value to it. The pre decimal stuff because its our old money system, and the 1966 50c because its a unique design and only came out for one year before they shitcanned it.

We also cant pluck junk silver out of circulation like americans can so we have to pay the insane premiums if we want them.

2bh m8 if you're just after the best bang for your buck I'd stick to the perth mint kangaroos.
If you can get junk for free or for cheap then go for it. It is great to have if you can avoid getting jewed, but that's almost never the case.

Seconding this. Do tell friend.

Fuck the junk silver unless you get it for free.

Buy in bulk with 1kg or 5kg bars or just buy a silver ETF.

what do you think about silver bars?

also is 1oz the best size to get for coins?

Amerisharts have fuck all silver coinage circulating now too. They abandoned silver in their currency around the same time as we did in the 60s.

You're buying silver for the material, not the fancy designs. Buy a huge fucking silver brick with a low premium.

1oz coins are a waste of time unless you can get them as cheap as a big bar.

It's harder to sell a bar tho, right? Because a bar is much easier to fake then a bunch of coins.

Drill it. I'm not joking, if you're buying a silver bar that you're unsure of and the seller seems shady, either drill it or take it to a gold/silver dealer to verify that it's a genuine bar.

There is a forum called silver stackers in Australia that has a buy/sell section, and there is a feedback system for members. You'll have lower premiums for buying there. I think Perth Mint sells there to IIRC.

Yeah but america didnt change the coinage. They only changed what it was made from. So all the old silver coins stayed in circulation. All of our silver predecimal coinage left circulation right away.

Yeah I worded that poorly. The best price will be a bar but that only if you're buying the big 100oz fuckers. But that can be a pain in the ass having to sell your stack in big chunks like that when you might only want to offload a small amount.
The 10oz bars are ok but they're not that much better value than a box of 1oz coins. Probably less when you take into account that the coins are more recognisable and trusted.

I do like both. My stack only has 100oz bars (for bringing down my average buy price) and government rounds (more liquid and i can sell in small anounts if need be).
Though i do also have a few 1966 50c pieces that I grabbed while i was in the fomo stage. Never again though.
