They aren't actually paying to hear him. The speeches he gives are just a convenient excuse for them to give him a lot of money, legally, for something with no real monetary value. In return, they expect a favor, which they have worked out with him in advance. It's like money laundering but entirely legal.

Nothing sneaky about it. It's a prestige thing. Saying a President came and spoke is about the most baller thing you can do as a organization. It's all to dab on other companies. Favors are of course par for the course as most presidents have enormous sway and levers in government circles.
