Any accountants here?

I'm starting to get pretty deep into my accounting degree and having some thoughts about jumping ship and just going compsci after seeing some recent salary numbers.

My main goal is to be a rich fuck by my 30s and get a hot young wife who only wants me for my money.

Should I change majors or stay the course?

Don't know how automation will shake things up, but CPAs usually make good money. My Mom is a CPA who makes 350k a year or so, working from home.

I'm a corporate controller. Most accountants get too stuck in the numbers and avoid talking to management about what to do. Pay attention in your other business classes. You'd be surprised at how ignorant people are on basic business things. The numbers are important but interpreting them and advising people is far more important.

Try to make friends or join some organizations to get a job. If you don't have an easy in (like I did) then good fucking luck.

honestly, most accountants make shit pay, unless you are among the top 10~20% of them

CompSci, Statistics, Math, Economics, or Engineering -- that's how you make six figures with a bachelor's degree

Thank you for the wise words anon.

I've been weighing out whether it's worth it to become a CPA. My goal is to have a career like you described where I am able to have a direct impact on day to day business rather than have a position doing tax/audit. Would you say that CPA would serve me well in my goals or should I stop at BS/get a masters in something like analytics?

compsci is intellectually stimulating and working as a dev is like solving jigsaw puzzles all day. if that sounds good to you then jump ship.

That's really what has me worried. I have one friend who had internships all through college and has ended up making like 70k in the bay area, which sounds good until you realize he probably spends his entire income on just living. and another friend who was a degen in college with no internships making like $20/hr doing shit work at some small firm.

It honestly seems fucked from all sides when you take into account that someone fresh out of college with a BS in compsci can land a career starting at 150k on the low end. (California money.)

If you've taken a lot of acct hours just apply for finance internships the first question in an interview is always "so anon...how much accounting do you know?" anyway

College is a waste of time. I can't go back. I'm making a game. It's going to make millions of dollars and become a big franchise. I literally can't be stopped or reasoned with.
My room is not dark, it's comfortably dim (settling down for bed)

The CS job market (really the software developer market) is set for a correction. Accounting is your best bet but go for your CPA ASAP. Get in the best possible school and intern as early as possible. Eventually you can start your own accounting business working from home.

incel spotted

most "computer science" jobs don't employ any cs theory because that is irrelevant. it doesn't hurt to know and would probably make you a better programmer but what is more vital is knowing your language really well including the frameworks and have a strong grasps of algorithmic analysis and data structures.

Posts like these are why you should do research outside of 4chan.

> Statistics
Decent pay as a data scientist but otherwise mediocre. Economics is terrible. Engineering is good only if you do EE or MechE. From what I've read and see there is actually a shortage of EE in the defense industry in the US.

> Math
So you want to teach math?

> CompSci
Ditto. CompSci's not a bad double major.

finish your degree but just go into a different aspect of business. Don't waste time on CPA or changing majors. Your major doesn't really matter. Employers just want to know you can finish a degree
