not on coinbase, but on binance they recently introduced the "margin" section, where your money gets donated to some chink shit it's really complicated on there, don't know too much about it. as long as you're trading under the exchange section you don't have to bother. if you wanna try margin better stick to niggermex, they allow you to use higher leverage until x100 which drastically decreases your chances of having to donate to the HFA

Nice tardbait. I'll bite. By using leverage you are explicitly borrowing someone else's money/btc that you have to return. The moment the value of your position drops to near the borrowed value you will be liquidated so as to preserve that value. Essentially it is designed such that the only value that can be lost is what you put up, anything lower and you are liquidated before that happens.

Let's say I want to long 100$ with 10x leverage.
100$ my own money
900$ borrowed
1000$ total long position
If I wanted to reduce the leverage of my position to 1x (no leverage) I would have to put 900$ of my own money into the position. This results that I now have 1000$ worth of bitcoin, which can only be liquidated when bitcoin itself reaches 0$
