I'd recommend not diving head first into 1kg or high oz bars unless you regularly make a lot per year and a few grand is just a small percentage of your paycheck.

Bars can be a bad idea because in a lot of countries they are subject to VAT while coins are taxfree because they are a currency (for the ones with a monetary value stamped on it).
For example where i live bars have a 20% VAT where coins are at 0%, so coins get a lot cheaper in the end.
