I have been looking into starting crypto, but I don't really know where to start. It seems like all the profitable ships (bitcoin, ethereum, chainlink, etc.) have sailed, and all we have left are shitcoin scraps that won't ever really be worth much. Where should a newbie start in this hostile new crypto environment?

Buy Bitcoin. It's easily got another order of magnitude of growth left. No, you won't put in five bucks and become a millionaire. You're still going to get better returns than in stocks or bonds or a bank account.
