Is it uncommon for sucessful people in business and industry to transition into an artistic career (writing, film, etc.)?

I am studying engineering because I value economic freedom and security. But still I dream of someday working with my passion™ when I have the economic means.

I guess I'm just looking for some inspirational examples. Shane Carruth for instance is a software enginner turned filmmaker with his acclaimed sci-fi debut "Primer".

In a general sense this thread is about balancing work against hobbies and other interests.

As long as you don't get into a research-specific career. I'm in DevOps and it changes every 3 fucking years so my spare time has to be spent learning coding/products/deployment technology when all I want to do is write shitty stories. Nearly impossible to get into a fun mindset right after work when you know you're supposed to be studying more work.
