A reputation system would be enough to incentivize. It's not very different from BitTorrent. BitTorrent has existed for over a decade, it provides fee and fast access to data (torrents) for anyone. Chainlink could be free with the right incentives.

They would run for free in exchange of reputation points.
Reputation points would grant them priority access to more secure oracles. Reputation tokens wouldn't be tradeable - you would only be able to get reputation points by running a node and providing quality data. Instead of rewarding nodes with LINK, the system would reward them with reputation points.

As I mentioned earlier, BitTorrent has worked for many years based on a simple reputation system - people who upload torrents get to download torrents faster. The same could wok for Chainlink.
Maybe you could still maintain the token, but make it optional.

bittorrent data is deterministic, static, always the same. An infohash always gets the same file. That's why bittorrent doesn't need reputation and is sybil resistant. You can verify yourself that the data you're not receiving doesn't match the infohash, and block bad nodes, because the data is deterministic, depending on the infohash.

Now oracles ARE NOTHING LIKE THAT. Oracles provide different data that change with time. You request the same source, yet get different result every time, and you have no way to verify, completely unlike bittorent, where you request from a source (the infohash) and always get the same deterministic data, which you can verify yourself based on the infohash, and malicious nodes get instantly/automatically blocked without you ever noticing.

Chainlink is not sybil resistant. Their imaginary reputation/staking/collateral design is complete bullshit and will not work (why do you think they haven't even started on it 2 years later, and haven't even released technical specs for it)

It's funny how you made assumptions about me (that I'm not a programmer, that I invested in Chainlink), an anonymous 4chan user, when you clearly didn't pay enough attention to what I wrote.

I was trying to show that, in theory, the Link token is useless, as a reputation 'score' would provide enough incentives for people to keep nodes running in an oracle network, providing access to data feeds for anyone wishing to use the network for free, without having to sell anything, and without forcing requestors to buy a token beforehand, making everyone's life much easier.

Ignore the reputation system described (roughly) in their whitepaper. I agree that that system isn't Sybil resistant, so forget about it. What I called 'reputation points' is something completely different.

1) it would be like the token, but non-transferable
2) in other words, you can't buy reputation points
3) the only way to get it is by running a node successfully
4) a node gets reputation points when it serves clients with data
5) nodes with higher reputation scores are rewarded with priority when requesting data from other nodes
6) clients block nodes that provide inaccurate data (that is, data that deviates from that provided by other nodes, and you can use statistics - factor analysis - to determine which data is deviant and which is normal)
7) nodes trying to cheat would be blacklisted and would stop receiving reputation points. Perhaps they could lose reputation points too. Reputation could decay over time, so you'd need to keep your node up and running in sync with other nodes to have a reputation score.

This is a simple design based on reciprocity. Because most of Chainlink users would be companies, it would give enough incentives for these companies to invest in their oracle nodes. Company A runs a node because it relies on companies B, C, D... Z for secure oracles. Most blockchain 'companies' nowadays have been pushing the idea that tokens are the only way to incentivize people to run nodes because, obviously, they're trying to sell tokens in their ICOs. However, as BitTorrent has shown since 2001, tokens are not the only way to incentivize p2p networks.
