You want me to shill? I'll shill it.

Initially it was supposed to just let people collect their data and sell it on for money to data brokers, but that strategy doesn't work all too well.

Recently they pivoted and built out a way for app developers to create "datawallets" that users create and silos their data. Tim-Berners Lee, the actual inventor of the Internet, proposed a similar thing a few years back.

For users, means you get a wallet with your data that you permission out to platforms and apps, rather than letting them store and control your data. Thus you can withdraw permission and be done with it when you want.

For developers, you have an easy way to make apps compliant with data laws + can access a broader data set than would otherwise normally be possible. For example, you get better insights into who your customers are and the insights only improve as datawallet gains market share thanks to network effects.

This explains it pretty clearly: https://medium.com/datawallet-blog/datawallet-3-0-allows-developers-to-build-with-truly-ethical-cross-platform-data-8e0b295d39e6
