The question is not the physical or theoretical possibility but the effort that it needs. Simple change to the n-factor makes manufactured ASICs useless.

The bottleneck is not the processor that does the calculation, but the RAM. The slower the connection from processor to RAM is, the less efficient the miner becomes. So you would have to construct new boards for new n-factors all the time, which is just not practicable.

SHA-256 can run simply on a processor. The speed of ASIC appears, when the algorithm is programmed into the chip directly. Scrypt demands not only the algorithm on the chip but also much RAM and therefore gets a much smaller Hashrate, because RAM is 1st. slower than the processor directly, 2nd can not be put into the PGA-Chip directly because it needs too much space and 3rd more expensive than mass produced ASIC chips. If you now modify the RAM an algorithm demands, you need new ASICs and new boards, which are expensive to produce and therefore ineffektive.

I remember when I tried setting up a mining rig with Debian back in the bitcoin days. I wasn't successful because of all this retarded hoop jumping I had to do to even begin to install proprietary drivers.

Gentoo is a lot easier to use, has newer packages while still being stable enough for daily use and gives you much greater control over your system.

Anyone knows why Vertminer is forcing me to only use 1 thread? I am forcing it with -g 2 but it keeps going 1. I use 2 threads on cgminer and it works perfectly fine, but not here.

Why does my rig suddenly freeze after like 5 mins of mining? That's what I'm planning, it's just that I can't make a huge impact with only a small amount since I can only afford to buy maybe 1-2 BTC whereas back in 09 I could have bought thousands for cheap.

Even if I have 2 BTC .. and it goes $10000/BTC that's not a dramatic return like it was if you had gotten in from 2009-2011
