14910968 No.14910968 [Reply] [Original]

I did the math and I would literally only save like $250 a month cooking all my meals from scratch vs eating out at fast casuals which is what I currently do. But I would waste so much fucking time and energy meal planning, cooking, and cleaning up. And this is assuming I put in the time to actually get good at cooking and not make shitty tasting food. Plus there's a good chance I won't even eat all the food I buy before it goes bad. I know people who throw away at least 50% of what they buy from the store.

I currently spend about $450-500 a month on takeout and get plenty of calories, nutrition, and taste. What's the point of putting all that effort in to cook for yourself just to save 2-3 grand a year on food? This doesn't apply if you actually enjoy cooking I but definitely fucking don't.

You cook at home not just because it's cheaper but because it's healthier (both from a feeling of satisfaction and fullness without the bloat, and in terms of long-term mortality), saves on gas, and tastes better.

>If you want to loose fat go for a run

Stale meme. You have to run for over 20 minutes just to burn the calories from a bottle of soda. Healthier doesn't necessarily mean 'cook your own food' though. There's the Subway Diet, after all, which is a lot better than frying your own food or eating a cheap lard burger at home, though Subway's a bit of an exception when matched against actual fast food like McDonalds. If you're going to eat meat then bake or grill white meat such as chicken or turkey and buy fruits and veggies at the grocery store. Fruits handle sugar cravings with very few calories. Much of hunger is actually just your body tricking you while you're dehydrated; fruits and smoothies will fix that due to high water content. Smoothies made with non-fat yogurt.

Big bag of potatoes - $8
Big bag of cheese - $10
Milk - $2.99 gallon
Cream - $4
Bacon - $3-6/lb
Ham - 6.99/lb
Lettuce - 1.99/head
Cranberries - 3.99/lb
Vinegeratte - 2.99
Butter - 5.99/4 pack
Wholegrain Bread - 1.99/loaf

Spaghetti - 4.99/lb
French bread - 2.99/loaf
Eggs - 5.99/18 eggs
Apples - $18/8 apples
Coffee - $1.2/pot

Total cost is $108 and that food will feed you for a month, this is assuming you have the capability to cook at home

If you get 2 hot and spicys 3 times a day for food you will be spending $225 a month on food and probably die of malnutrition along with no variety. Assuming you get a meal at mcdonalds for every meal and spend $6.5 on average for every meal that will be 585 per month on food. That's $450 dollars saved with good variety and dense calories in your meals.
Your just lying to yourself if you think its cheaper to eat out every day, theres no reason not to make your own food.

>> No.14911536

I cook all my own meals and I only spend $20 a day on food, $5 a day on fake ice cream, $5-$6 a day on drinks, for a total of just $30 every day.
I ate out everyday for years and spent $40-$60 a day on myself.
Now I'm eating keto out home is just so much healthier than eating out.
I buy 180 free range eggs and around 50lbs of bacon at a time. I also buy all a specific flavor of enlightened ice cream from the only 3 stores that carry it within 15 miles.
Everything in this fridge except the diet coke and box of pasta is mine.
I eat 8 eggs, 3/4lb to 1lb of bacon, turkey sausage or pork sausage or chicken sausage, a pint of enlightened ice cream or cauliflower or broccoli most days. Sometimes I have a full chicken or grass fed beef or make chicken salad or tuna salad. 6 scrambled eggs, with 2 over easy, with a pound of grass fed beef, chopped onion, dill relish, and mustard all mixed in a mixing bowl is also really really good. But I really don't deviate much. Usually just eggs bacon sausage and ice cream.
It's delicious and healthy.

>> No.14911773

I eat in almost every meal including lunches. I am not a very good cook. Better than most people since most don't cook, but I focus on simple recipes.

>time
I can make a meal in 20-30 minutes which is about just as long as it takes to go to pick up takeout or wait in line at fast food. But a lot of times I make multiple servings so I have leftovers which cuts my time in half or more. I also make my lunches in bulk every week, 5 lunches in around an hour usually, which is 10-15min per lunch. Much faster than getting lunch at work.

>quality
I can make meals in the above time that are equivalent to $15-20 plates at restaurants near me. Except my meals cost $1-3 of ingredients. I can eat high quality food at less than $10/day.

>nutrition
I know 100% of every ingredient in my food. Restaurants rarely have nutritional information, and if they do they are widely inaccurate and vary. I also know there is no spit, urine, or semen in my food.

>price
I spend around $300/month on groceries. I almost never eat out unless I am going to a high end restaurants ($40+ plates) because rarely can restaurants cheaper than that make noticeable better food than I can cook.

> But I would waste so much fucking time and energy meal planning, cooking, and cleaning up.

All the health aspects aside once you learn how to cook these are non-events.

>meal planning

What is walking into the supermarket vegetable/fruit/meat section and buying things in season. Cheap because in season. Good taste because fresh due to being in season. That is literally it. Buy meat that is good $ value. You don't have to "meal plan" anything, nature does it for you and stores incentivese it by having stuff in season cheaper than imported avocados for $10.

Add staples like oil, butter, salt, dried herbs/spices and you're done.

>cooking
10 minutes? Stainless or cast frypan. Chefs knife. Cutting board. Done. Heat pan, put meat in pan. Prep vegetables while meat cooks. Flip.

>cleaning up
10 minutes max. If I am alone it is more like two. Rinse pan. Wash plate/knife/fork/chopping board/prep knife. Once you autopilot prep/cleaning more effort goes into ordering takeout than cooking.

>How can I possibly have a high fat, extremely low carb diet while being a vegetarian or vegan?
You do not need to have a high fat, low card diet in order to be healthy.
>Vegetarian and vegan diets aren't even healthy
Bullshit meat eaters tell themselves to justify not changing their habits.Vegetarians and vegans on average live longer than meat eaters do. If it wasn't healthy then we would not see this.

>Not all protein is equal and protein from onions and beans just sucks
More bullshit meat eaters tell themselves. Even if it was true, the slight increase in protein quality you claim that you get from eating bacon everyday, does not morally justify literally killing hundreds of animals every year.

>Fruit and vegetables these days is so modified and unnatural and loaded with sugars. It's nothing like fruit from a hundred years ago.
Then choose were you get your fruit and vegetables from. Are you claiming that your meat is so much better quality? Are you claiming it is unhealthy eating fruits and vegetables?

>They don't even look the same.
There is absolutely inherently wrong with GMO's. Bananas were changed because they look more appealing and are easier to eat this way. This has nothing to do with the nutrients provided.

>My vegetarian cousin...
This entire paragraph is at best a stretch of the truth, but I actually believe it's a complete and utter lie. If someone did become unhealthy by becoming a vegetarian/vegan it would be because they didn't educate themselves enough and ate a shit diet. Just because you can be healthier on a vegetarian/vegan diet, doesn't mean you can just transition without education yourself.

Look at Patrik Baboumian. World record holder and body builder. Completely vegan. You tell yourself this lie that it's unhealthy just because it's at the moment socially acceptable to and you can't be bothered to change your completely immoral and unethical habits.

You can tell that you are either exaggerating or lying. Your brother could just be simply eating the completely wrong foods. However let's say that you are being 100% honest. Is the reason 'not having to eat more' a morally justifiable reason to not contribute to the death of hundreds of animals per year?

If you have ADHD, a high fat low carb diet does wonders. Vegetarians are also more likely to be depressed.

You can be a vegan and have a healthy body, but if you're predisposed to mental issues, you have to change your diet. Even if say you have bad skin... Cutting out carbs and dairy can reduce your breakouts and shrink the appearance of your pores.

Source? Also source on the graph as well? That looks like a classic bullshit /pol/ graph.

Everyone by default should be vegan. People should then have to give ethically justified reasons as the why their diet must involve the death or slavery of animals.

i shop once a week, simple healthy dinners, i buy 5 pieces of meat and enough veggies or sides to go with each one, its a lot cheaper than you think if you know how to shop for things.

go to places like Ruler or Aldi's. a 10 pack of chicken tenders (raw) is like $5, pan fry them with seasoning, eat with off-brand ranch dressing and roasted broccili, then there is some left for lunch the next day too. a package of frozen hamburger is like $2.50, can make 4-5 burgers, or two massive ones, turkey is cheap as shit, pork is cheap as shit, strip steaks can be cheap as shit sometimes too.
me and the wife eat out about twice a week out of necessity, we just get busy and have places to go, no matter where we go, even mcdonalds its about $10 a person for a decent mean that isnt just mcchickens. where as you can cook a decent dinner for around $5, with maybe 10 minutes of prep time, and 10 minutes of clean up, same amount of time it takes to wait in a drive through around here and its healthier and normally better.

otherwise you'll save tons of money preparing your own meals - either on 1 day for the whole week or on 2 days for ~ 1 week ... doing it everyday would also be possible depending on how and what ... but far less practical

It depends on how much your time is worth, desu... and that's dependent on your cashflow. If you're like the average person that works 40 hours a week for Mr. Sheckleberg, and the time making food would've otherwise be spent on porn, pot and netflix then saving $5 to $10 on an hour of work (between buying groceries, prepping, cooking and cleaning) is worth it. However for freelancers/entrepreneurs in which work is less structured and free time is the only constraint (if I wanted to I COULD work 24 hours), then essentially making minimum wage is not a good deal.

I have a chef from a local restaurant prepare me all organic meals and deliver them 3 times a week at $15 a piece for lunch and dinner (breakfast is usually just black coffee) and I just throw it in the microwave or sometimes eat it cold if I'm in a huge rush. It's delicious, easy, healthy and fast... so much that the idea of cooking really makes no sense for me.
