Before I enter a trade I know where my stop is and my price target. I know what I'm expecting to happen. When I exit on a loser I record how far the trade went past my stop to determine whether it was a "shake out" and thus if my stops may be too tight or if I got the direction wrong and my stop was well placed even though my assessment of direction may not have been (my most common issue on losers). My stops tend to be life-saving, but that's because I often get the direction of the largest move wrong. If I'm wrong, I'm usually REALLY fucking wrong.

On a winner I assess how much further the profits ran after my exit to determine how much of the winning moves I'm efficiently capturing (another one of my issues; not even getting 50% of the winning moves on average). If the trade runs $.75, I might get $.10 of that move. If it runs $.35 I'll get $.05. This issue of getting the direction wrong about half the time and when I get it right not making anywhere near the bulk of the move keeps me unprofitable over the long run. Is that pretty much the majority of what I should be doing from an analysis standpoint and what I should be focusing on fixing (better direction assessment/better win management/bigger profit targets)?

I then tend to really hone in on individual trades like "well you sold at resistance on this losing trade, but the sellers weren't pushing the bids down. If the sellers don't push the bids down quickly you need to get the fuck out." This last part is what feels like hindsight. I'm taking the experience of a given trade and using it to write prescriptions for future trading (that might not even be valid) and I might be dodging the big issues my stats actually say that I have. Again, I guess my question is should I instead focus my efforts on the issues my statistics legitimately say are the problem like getting the direction of the big move wrong too often and not capturing enough of the winning moves?
