Hi
im trying to get my head around Ethereum (im not a programmer, just uni student studying cyber security)

Need someone to bottom line this for me. What is a hard fork?

I've reading few a couple of articles and they all mention the hard fork happened and how bitcoin has failed and ether was returned.

I'm going out on a limb but the community changed/rewrote the code to restore the blockchain (gaining control over the funds in childDAO) So now Ethereum and Ethereum Classic exist as tradeable currencies???

Am i close or way off the mark?

A "hard fork" is just what Shrek calls his two headed ogre penis.

As far as I understand it ,ethereum devs rewrote code to reverse transactions on the blockchain and then released that updated ethereum software for everyone to upgrade ,the idea was that the old chain would die within a day and everything would be back to normal but a lot of people decided to support the original ethereum chain because they didn't agree with the ethereum foundations decision to hard fork so now we have 2 ethereum's
