I'll check this out. Being a generalist has helped me a lot in life. A few things I've gotten good at have been automated or outsourced, so it's nice being nimble and having several backup plans instead of getting cucked like my specialist colleagues.

Yeah part of it is just finding the most optimal position for yourself, which is hard to do if you have stuck in your field your entire life.

The other part is being able to see how the varied specializations fit together.

Entrepreneurs and the C-suite are often generalists. It's just nice to know that there is some good research backing up these notions.

bump. I think being a "generalist" is akin to just being curious in 2019. Whenever i dont know the answer to something i just google it and read about it. Its that simple. Conversely, some people these days actively avoid learning new things. Its like theyre scared to find out they didnt know something.

lmao this pleb, many people invest 10,000+ hours into their field of study and still barely scratch the surface. If you want to truly push the boundaries you need the unique perspective gained only through expert knowledge in multiple fields. Be a polymath. At the very least accompany your main field of study with some programming/comp sci so you can benefit from analyzing large data sets and billions of calculations per second, and also invest some time into learning how to run a business so you can actually bring your work to market so you can fund further research and not die in poverty like many past geniuses have.

Nice to see all the positivity but being a generalist has ruined my career. I fail at everything because I can apply to a dozen different jobs with five years of experience, and then I lose every one to a specialist with ten years experience.
