>A majority of Americans have less than $1000 in their bank accounts
I live in California. I know this spic who wheels around an ice cream cart and chips and soda. He left three years ago to Mexico and came back last year. To get him across the border he spent $8000 for a coyote.
How in the fuck does a Mexican selling ice cream and chips have more cash to throw around than most Americans, especially in a time of supposed economic growth? If I spent my entire life in America, got educated, went to college maybe, and still couldn't save $1000 in my forties, I'd fucking kill myself.

Because people would rather buy a new iPhone every year and live outside their means than save and grow their money.

You’re not going to like my answer: by and large humans are not intelligent, a large subset of them are incompetent at a few essential activies relevant to modernity and a significant subset of them are barely making it. These last group work odd jobs and have inconsistent livelihoods. Earlier in their adult life they can ‘hustle’ as their youthful stamina is still in place. As these people get older there are enough social services to barely help these people get by.

Even this group will not become homeless however. There is enough basic survival instinct to spur them into action, the occasional fire under their ass if you will that overrides their incompetence. But only briefly. Some of these people are able to put off the present for the future but only on certain occasions and not in a lasting and consistent manner. That’s how these people come up with that money. Many will also do less than legal things to help get them there.

To me the central ethical question of our capitalist era is at once political and economic: what to do with these people? You’re familiar with the answers in the form of basic political distinctions.

Ice cream cart, so he started a business instead of blowing everything with massive student loans

Because he sleeps on an inflatable mattress or in a sleeping bag in a rental house barracks with 30+ other Mexicans and sends all of the money he earns selling misshapen sonic the hedgehog icecream faces to Mexico tax-free through a process called "remittances" while paying under $100 a month for his living expenses and only pockets the sales tax on non-cash transactions.

Meant only 'paying'. REEEE

Anyway, he's probably getting every kind of small business grant and tax subsidy as well.
