Public accounting in general is like sticking your face into the beehive in order to get the honey. Midsize regional firms are just more tolerable and offer the same compensation. Even still, I would not recommend any young person reading this to go into Audit or Tax. Audit will never grow past 5% anymore, and tax season crunch is just laughably inhumane. Do something smarter such as business valuation, forensics, IT Auditing, cybersecurity consulting, fund management, or other consulting arm a public accounting firm. Those practices sell work that's worth more, have better realization values, grow faster, and have less stress/hours. And you get to enjoy all the upward mobility of the audit/tax side as well as all the PTO and other perks.
