How do I move up in a company?

>working for a startup in an analyst position
>they have a software engineering position open
>have lots of programming experience, but in a totally different industry (industrial controls, PLC programming)
>have good relationship with engineering manager

Should I apply? Could it reflect poorly on me, or ruin my chances at taking the position at a future date?

Do it.

But PLC programming IS completely different.

However if you are smart and know what you are doing with the particular language it shouldn't be a problem.

The reason I'm hesitating to apply is because I don't really know what I'm doing with those languages.

Initially I'd be doing a lot of work with python and SQL, both of which I'm okay with. I've made some meaningful changes to the company in those languages, but nothing super significant.

I am smart though.

It's worth a shot, right? Worst case scenario is you don't get the job, and maybe someone gives you a little advice on your career. Don't spend your whole life thinking "What if I had applied to that job"

This is what I'm thinking. I'm just no pro at this corp culture thing - I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

Go ahead and apply

But sweeten the deal and future offers by dropping on your knees and sacking off your future boss

Don't think about it, just do it it's not as bad as you think and it'll show you really care

why don't you talk to the department head/your future boss about it? If anything, they will be impressed with your enthusiasm.

They won't throw you knee deep into complex code immediately right off the bat. Hell, in most cases they take you through a training/mentoring program and you learn what you need to know anyways. In all honesty the actual real world work is a bajillion times different than school. Hell, I was shit at math in school and I could walk in Google and pick up on how to do my job just based on company training.
you might as well do it

Thanks guys.

Gonna talk to boss soon, and then put application in.

wish you the best of luck! hope you get it.

Seriously, just apply. Have you really ever heard of applying for a job to be detrimental to someone's career?

Thanks anon

No, I'm just paranoid I guess. Thanks for the advice.
