True fungibility is really important, and it's one of the reasons I still don't buy shit online with bitcoin (I don't want to pay an extra couple percent to tumble either, and I am not sure how cleaned coins would even be). For example, if I withdraw bitcoin from Coinbase, then spend it online, then the merchant refunds someone, who then spends it on the darknet, there is only 3 steps between me and the darknet user, and chainanalysis will definitely find the coinbase coins, who will then start asking me questions, and if I don't have a good answer or a receipt, I'm in trouble. Unless somewhere in between me and the darknet user the coins are cleaned (ie tumbled or someone sends them to a reputable wallet like Coinbase), there will always be problems with dirty coins, which would probably create a market for cleaned coins, and exchanges might even fill those roles, meaning 0 privacy for us all.

Coinbase -> Me -> online merchant -> darknet
Chain analysis goes back to Coinbase who can rat me out

Coinbase -> Me -> online merchant -> Kraken -> someone else -> darknet
Chain analysis goes to Kraken, leaving me safe

Point is, Bitcoin will be fucking annoying without fungibility and make it unusable for everyday life and nobody wants to keep cleaning their coins, it is something that really needs to be baked into the protocol. Monero really does serve a good purpose, but at the same time, it might end up just being a utility token for actual cash spends. Either way, privacy is for everyone, not just for criminals. Because even if you are 100% honest, your coins might be linked to someone who isn't and the chainanalysis police will come knocking on your door.

it is even worse than that: imagine you are paying for pizza in a restaurant with Bitcoin. One observer only needs to look at the restaurants address at the time of your payment to know your address and your balance. After you leave, the observer might follow and rob you.

>> No.14252414

it's all about risk management and when the biggest thief out there is the government and most of your crypto is as vulnerable as your bank account you'd be kind of stupid not to have a safety net of monero.

This is the funny thing. The main issue with monero seems to be that people agree that bitcoin is a better ponzi scheme. The stupid thing about that is that as ponzis go, bitcoin is already more inflated with less upside.

>> No.14252626

>>14252526
Exactly. The fungibility issue of bitcoin is why it fails as a digital cash replacement. Bitcoin maximalists say:
>dude just tumble your coins lol
Except all people will not do this when it's not forced upon them, and those that do just run the risk of picking up traces of tainted coins.

>> No.14252749

>>14252626
not to mention, the sheer fact that you're tumbling coins to begin with could put you under suspicion by an exchange

This is already an issue. There was a post on BISQ's forum where a guy claimed his account at another exchange (I think it was Kraken but I can't remember for sure) was suspended after he deposited bitcoin from a BISQ XMR-BTC trade to his KYC'd account there. Whether or not the bitcoin he picked up was actually tainted (and BISQ is a place that you'd definitely see someone offloading potentially dirty bitcoin in exchange for Monero) or the exchange just recognized the fact that he picked up bitcoin from a DEX (possible due to the multisig tag visible in a DEX exchange) is hard to say but if that guy is to be believed, it's further confirmation that exchanges are already suspicious of the history of certain bitcoins, not that we weren't already supsicious this was going on.

At some point, bitcoin's community is going to have to come to grips with the fact that it barely functions as a currency at its base layer.

Yeah, both situations are bad. The fact that BTC picked up from a DEX might be treated automatically as red-flagged is definitely worrisome for the future of both bitcoin and monero.

>> No.14255435

>>14255083

How is it bad for Monero though? Assuming you are cashing out XMR to Fiat you never have a problem with tainted coins.

Kraken has XMR/USD pairing.

>> No.14255574

>>14255435
As long as there are USD/XMR pairings then we'll be alright, but I just don't like the idea of needing to rely permanently on centralized exchanges not booting Monero at some point in the future. I don't think that will ever happen, but I don't like the idea of DEX's being rendered sort of useless if exchanges start treating DEX acquired BTC as automatically tainted.
