If you're close to death: make an outrageous claim; one that puts your previous accomplishments to shame. Claim to have proof and publicly announce a date for the revelation of the proof/evidence. On said date, you travel to a far away place where nobody could ever find you. Then kill yourself. You will go out as a legend shrouded in absolute mystery. People will speak your name for decades if not centuries.
