I had a real shitty job a couple years back as an English teacher in my home country. Coworkers were ok and students were mostly ok as well, but the pay was just total ass. I spent half of what I earned daily simply getting to the place and buying a couple groceries here and there. I wasn't even working to sustain myself as I lived with my parents (and still do) and they have always been solidly mid-class, but even as a part-time gig while studying, it just wasn't worth it. I did improve my spoken English somewhat, which would have been nearly impossible to do otherwise. The manager who was in charge of like all 6 branches in the city was a top guy, completely invested in the place not going down, always receptive. No idea how he managed to do it, or if he's still at it. One day I simply stopped going. They didn't even call me back. They must have been dealing with that all the time at that point. Didn't even bother to get my severance pay as it was peanuts and shrinking by the day.

My previous positions were clerical, though. At Toyota I'm more of an analyst. I do all the banking and payroll. High paying? Controller. Purchasing officer. Actuarial work. Comfy? Clerical. There's no healthy balance that I've seen between well paying and comfort.

Anon, please register with your state and start a small business. When you start looking for a job and they ask about your gap, just tell them you've been running your own business. At least then you can explain that you didn't bother registering it until it was starting to "take off" but now you want to keep it more as a hobby.
