Sure anon, I can explain my understandings of things right now. Currently, you need either a phone number or Facebook account to sign up and what is basically occurring is an initial distribution of coins. It’s all happening on a Pi server emulator so it’s in no way a public blockchain – yet. When main net goes live it will be a public blockchain and all the Pi that has been distributed to you in this stage will be carried over to your address in main net.

Pi Network is taking a different approach to “mining”. Instead of Proof of Work (PoW), it is planning to use Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) which was proven by David Mazieres in 2015 (see: https://www.stellar.org/papers/stellar-consensus-protocol.pdf).). There are way more details outlined in the white paper in the app but in essence, unlike the Stellar Network where it consists of "mostly companies and institutions (e.g. IBM) as nodes, Pi intends to allow devices of individuals to contribute on the protocol level and get rewarded, including mobile phones, laptops and computers." I would recommend reading the white paper draft in app to get a comprehensive understanding of Pi Network.
