He is short, so he is betting the price will go down. You put up some BTC as collateral and are borrowing from the exchange to purchase a larger exposure than you can really afford. If the price goes too high and you can't cover the losses then you get liquidated. The opposite happens if you long.

He's borrowing funds from the exchange. Say he has $100, he leverages 10x and can trade for $1000. Liquidation happens when the market moves in the wrong direction and you lose all your funds. Say you're going long, without leverage the price would have to go to $0 for you to lose all your money, the higher the leverage, the smaller your margins are. What OP did is bet on the price going down, so he's losing money because it's going up.
