his identity was stolen because someone bought his social security number online and then called up a help desk somewhere saying "i forgot my password" used publically availible details on the guy's facebook to answer stuff like birthday and place of birth and then logged in like he owned the place.

>> No.13845545

Maybe because with crypto you have the control. Then again most people are too fucking stupid to protect their own money so maybe banks are the way to go for them.

>> No.13845548

i really only envision crypto as enabling certain markets that are impossible otherwise or, optimistically, serving as an ever growing "alternative" economy

Sean lost his money because he is stupid. He used a carrier directly, like AT&T/Verizon by utilizing SMS as a 2FA. He was the victim of a SIM port attack. It's not hard to do. This is why I use a Pixel phone that has a Titan security chip inside, coupled with Google's Advanced Protection Program. This means my entire account requires two hardware keys, the Titan chip in my Pixel and one of the Titan Security keys that comes separate. I also use Google Fi and have a Trezor Model T hardware wallet, with a stainless steel seed phrase. I also carry a gun and have many alarms and bodyguards, so don't think about robbing me.

How i've heard it work in the past was as simple as the hacker calling a carrier and pretending they worked for a store, i.e. best buy, and were with a customer who bought a new phone. The hacker would aound urgent like the customer was being an ass and the carrier would swap sims. I'm guessing the hacker would also need basic information about their target

Interesting, but wouldn't they need some sort of vendor identification number pegged to the carrier's system to identify the caller as a legit agent capable to make those changes to the customer account?

There are ways around everything. Vendor verification won't stop a hacker. If anything, it would make it easier once a hacker has a verification number.
