I always like to mention this anecdote in these kinds of threads. I watched a documentary on opiate addicts. There was a kid who was not even twenty who had resorted to begging for money to buy fentanyl tablets. He had an extreme addiction and tolerance evidenced by needing an ungodly amount to stave off withdrawals. He counted up everything he had spent on drugs in one year and it amounted to over 400k. Imagine that.

He said he was hit by a drunk driver in a truck. I'd say don't give them money, but if you want to be involved, join a shelter or give them directions to a shelter, food, a 1 month cheap gym membership so they can shower or clean themselves up, or some cheap business casual clothes from the thrift store.

I give money, cigs and booze to my local hobos. I know one of them by name and once drank w em.
I do this, cos:
1. They are non-violent and generally frenly. If they live the hood, less agreable hobos might move in
2. They are 24/7 on the block. If they find my ID I dropped, I am sure they will give it back to me. If I need their help in an emergency on the street, theyd help me out. If I were a dick to them, they'd be less likely to help me
