What can I do with a bitcoin core wallet I forgot the password to in 2013? pic related.

I am currently trying to learn python so that I can figure out how to use BTC Recover but unless I remember something about the password I'm pretty well fucked because I know it was atleast 25+ characters long. the last password I remember was "There is no way in hell I'm going to remember this one either." and I was able to run a permutation check on it to no avail.

there's a chance you'll remember. human mind is amazing.
write down everything you know about that core password on a sheet of paper. try all possible combinations. Try changing uppercase / lowercase.

I definitely did not use any password I normally used, however I know what format my passwords were in at that time.

They would have been in a "Correct Horse Battery Staple" format, or possibly a phrase from a song.

I'm currently on the thought process that I perhaps changed it to song lyrics,as there was a number of bands I was "in to" at that time. So I am periodically trying different things there.

I vaguely remember changing it in the middle of the night with my infant daughter, but I can't tell if that's a real memory as I was sleep deprived at that time. By morning I had forgotten the changes I made, or that I even made any.

I was changing it because when I ran the test bed, I used "there is no way in hell I'm going to remember this password" or something like that. I thought that there was a slight chance that the final wallet password was too similar to the test bed password, so if the test bed was not properly airgapped at the time it was set up, it was possibly insecure, so I changed it, then completely forgot I had done so.

there are ways. First of all the owner knows a shitload of information about the password.

Secondly even if it were a random meaningful sentence of words cracking can be speed up using bigram.

Sure you can only try only X passwords per second. But what you write about the password security is only true about sextillion years is when trying the passwords randomly.

When you know something about the password you can speed up cracking massively.

I try to remind myself that really I only lost $150. There's reasonable doubt I would have managed to hold through all the ups and downs. There were plenty of moments I might have justified cashing out, and would have kicked myself later for selling.

here is how i do it, it's not too late for you
use bip38 paper wallets! 0.1 btc each, and a strong passphrase your autism will help this time, but write it down to paper (you will destroy it later on) generate the wallets on an offline computer with mint live os. after you printed them to pdf you can print as many copies (and keep digital copies too) as you want 3 physical at 3 location is the minimum.

once you did a separate decryption test on your airgapped computer and verified the addresses, you can start sending bitcoins to them.

now for the password, you want this to not get lost but nobody has access to it until you die. cut the password to pieces and store them at the 3 separate location the final piece goes to a lawyer in your deed where you describe who gets it under what conditions after whom.

you can also put the password in a safe deposit box which will release contents in case of inheritance. that's also one way to go at it.

i'm thinking about a key sharing scheme that does not decrease security but not too complicated for laymen. xor would be an obvious solution place one vector in a safe box
give out 2 vectors to your family in a sealed envelope and 2 to the lawyer with instructions on which to release to whom in case you die. any a¤b¤c will give the password in ascii padded by spaces that will get discarded as per instructions.

at this point I have long term storage on regular, unencrypted paper wallets and put them in a safe. I use Exodus wallet for everything else, which has 12 word backup and email backup for the wallet. So I have multiple backup copies of my "hot" wallet.

yeah but having multiple copies at multiple sites is a must for adequate disaster proofing. in case of unencrypted this decreases the security not increases. you can't even print unencrypted wallets completely theoretically securely today. and anyone that finds that safe gonna have them.

it's still better to have encrypted wallets at multiple sites and store the password written on a piece of paper and also memorized separately. more robust safer.

if you have to run with your bitcoins when all your assets and money can be frozen a paper wallet is easily confiscate able while an encrypted wallet can be posted online to a bunch of places even here on 4chan to recover from the archives. or pastebin. and you can run with it. nobody can stop it at borders.

also use fucking password safes! come on people! there is only one password you really need to remember and you can use unique strong passwords for every account of yours.

download Hashcat

download a database of lyrics from all the bands you liked, ask a programmer to put all sentences into lists

but again if you have to trust your lawyer any further than handle your inheritance you are doing it wrong.

share the secret so no actor alone can screw you. preferably 2-3 parties and even then you can reveal only part of the password. like leave a 6-8 letter to get brute forced (should take months to crack) so that you can act if someone tries to get your coins while you are still alive.
