Hulu - yeah they only owned a small chunk of it. Not really enough to do much with, except use it as leverage. Which they did. Basically held a gun to Dis's face and said "pay up bitch" Dis payed up.

Some office tower - Not needed and costing them money in upkeep fees. Better to sell it and let someone else foot the bill.

Quick math says that $800 a month over five years is $48,000. You don't need much interest to reach your goal amount. The problem with stocks is what if the market crashes and loses 40%? You might not have the money there when you need it (4-5) years. Putting some in stocks is probably okay, but not all of it, and I would consider keeping a large portion in a cash account.

The $50 target price could be wrong, hell the majority of target prices turn out to be just plain wrong. The buyout being quoted at double that, that's not a given. The premium could be 50%. And 50% is a great premium anyway. I'm not trying to bash, but I get the feeling that you're not super experienced and I don't want you to do what so many others have and stop trading and leave the market because your expectations didn't play out. That's understood, but market crashes do happen. You said you want to have this money for you in the next 4-5 years. Even if you assume that stocks will give you the longest return over the long run (which is not necessarily a safe assumption), if a major drop happens in those 4-5 years (which is not an unreasonable possibilty), you may be forced to either cash out your stocks at a innoportune time in order to get the funds for your down payment on your house, or alternatively, you may be forced to delay buying a house past when you would have liked. I just wouldn't dump 100% into stocks. If you're specifically saving for a down payment 4-5 years in the future, I would invest the minority of those savings (that are specifically for that purpose) in stocks.

You may be waiting a while for a crash, true. But do not go 100% stocks. I don’t know if that’s common wisdom, but it’s should be.

The market right now is insane, it trades based on politics: Trump’s tweets of course, but also Dems who are really only candidates for the primaries, news stories out of China, and plane crashes. I am no expert, but I think this is a good time to be up to 50% cash, so you can buy good stocks of good companies that are taking way too much damage from headlines or politics.

Of course, there’s also the idea that you should be buying an S&P index fund with your first 10k in the market, something like vtsax, and that is also a great idea. Less risk, but very dependable reward. Maybe you’ll learn less about stocks, but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you’re concerned with right now.

50% cash is a little extreme, but it’ll give you a chance to use that cash to buy more every time you hear that the stock market is getting hit hard.

The article is claiming that investing by dumping money only into index funds at bad times over the period 1972-2013 would yield something on the order of a 10x result. That's a good point, but we're talking about someone who is saving for something five years away. Second those same returns shouldn't be assumed as a given over every 50-year window of time.

I wouldn't necessarily try and time the market. Very few people can do it and when they do it's probably luck. There's an old idea that you should be 30% stocks, 30% cash and 30% real estate and I think the other 10% you're supposed to use to hoard foreskins or something, not that that matters or whatever but, from everything that I've always been taught and witnessed first hand you want to be in the market but not all the way all the time. I personally have a stash that I dip into when stocks go on sale and then replenish as soon as possible. That way I'm able to make moves and hopefully that money isn't in the market when it all comes down. But you need to figure out what you're comfortable with. I honestly would be pretty sad for any anonbros around here who were trying to save for a house and lost 50% in a crash. For me, I would probably be putting half my money in and the rest in a high interest savings account.

I don’t know enough about chip/semiconductors right now to know who is vulnerable with what’s happening in China. If China cracks down on apple, all of its suppliers will be affected, and that could be very good for some of them and extremely painful for others. I’m really not the one to ask.

I resisted the weed thing for a long time until I couldn’t ignore it. So I also bought hexo on a whim, and some CGC and MJ. I was up on all of them and now I’m mixed. CGC seems to be the “sure thing” of the bunch, or so I hear. Less upside than the ones that are getting bought out, but less downside then the ones who will fail.

Actually, I’m probably the worst person to ask about chips and cannabis. I still think Altria, the company that owns Marlboro and other tobacco brands, will do very well in the space with their investment in Cronos. So what do I know.

Seems like a very volatile sector to me, and overvalued because investments are coming in based on projections of how much business will be possible if/when recreational cannibus is federally decriminalized.

Both of them are technically great for just buying a holding. But due to competition from other companies offering lower fee ETF's, Vanguard lowered the fee on VTI. While it might seem small thats a 25% cut compared to the index version.

There is nothing bad about buying the ETF and holding forever til the end of time. In this case its actually better.

Jack Bogle never liked ETF's much because they are easier to intra-day trade and track while he always wanted to encourage buying and holding. Which is fine. But ETF's do what index funds do while also leaving open the option to trade if you want.

You won't be more vulnerable with the ETF version. Think of it like this:

>Index funds are older tools. The theory, which is sound, is that its better to just buy and hold. No timing the market. Hold through the volatility and the ride the market instead.

>ETF's come along and are newer tools. Now you can do everything the index fund can do but also track and trade intra-day. So if news hit and you wanted to get out, so time the market or panic sell, you could do that. No waiting til the end of day to know what price you bought or sold at.

I agree with Vanguard's philosophy of not attempting to time the market which makes the ETF's intra-day trading less of a factor. But, I do have the option and with competition among ETF's getting more fierce, you are likely to see fees drop even more. I think Fidelity(?) has a zero fee ETF now.

MMMMMMM Nope.

When you have a company recovering from bankruptcy after its stock has been shorted to hell because an activist Jew short seller is advertising his position while a generic pharmaceutical company based out of Israel is targeted for conspiracy and commission of price fixing offense, where a former employee of said Israeli company is now working at LCI and is the only individual at the company who sold shares recently when everyone else there was buying, you think this wont make news?

This is like getting in on shorting mortgage bonds in '08. Nobody's looking. They just think shortsellers/bankruptcy/lawsuit=no touchy le stock. This is a unique trading opportunity.

Alibaba just published their annual earning. Their Mobile MAU have reached 721 Million, up 104 Million from previous year.
They claim 77% new user in FY2019 came from "Xiachen Shichang" aka the less developed part or the emerging part of the Chinese market.
I am not too sure how to interpret these two figures.
I guess most of the mobile MAU grow come from pushing desktop users toward using their mobile apps, so I don't think that figure have a lot of meaning
On the other hand I am not sure how to interprete the 77% figure. Given that most people in the more developed part of China should have already become a member of Alibaba platform already, it make sense that most growth come from the less developed part of the Chinese market. However, it is still only 77%, does that mean there are still some untapped users in the more economically advanced Chinese cities, or does that mean the impact given to Alibaba by PDD in rural market is larger than expected?

That is the Chinese way of thinking. They think it is absolutely normal for them to take western tech, they think this is the natural and expected consequence of those companies trying to enter Chinese market and there are no points for the west to complain when they are benefiting from the Chinese market and also exploiting Chinese labor force

With a trend like this, I'm figuring I'll have to sell soon. It's not likely that they'll break out and climb beyond their usual max, will they? Does any company?

The good news is that if you put in 1/4 of what you put into those puts into buying LCI shares now, you'll more than make your mone back when it hits $25.
