The dev team recently put out an updated FAQ which answers a lot of the questions people have been having as it’s a brand new coin/project. Some of the questions they have answered are:
What is the value of pi?
About the same as BTC in 2008, it’s brand new so it isn’t listed on any exchanges or anything yet.
When will it be worth something?
In-app transfers have a stated goal of “as soon as Q4 2019”, It can be listed on exchanges as soon as they reach phase 3 (you can see their roadmap on the website.
How can it be effectively mined on a phone?
Instead of being based on PoW, “Pi secures its ledger when members vouch for each other as trustworthy.” This comes in two forms, 1, clicking a button to verify you are a human, and 2, by forming interlocking security circles of who you trust as a human.

Some other people you can join are: Muu9 and Amphetamine, we all have the security circle function unlocked so you can earn additional pi if we add you to out circles.

I forgot to mention, as of right now it's mined exclusively on phones, although no battery/processing power is actually used used to mine because it isn't mined through PoW.
