Pensions aren't worth a damn thing if the company lays you off before you vest or does some other dirty trick such as plundering the pension (see Jack Welch). Unless you're working for the federal government or a high-level executive, the pension is nothing but a promise to be broken.

Pensions are nice if you can get them and if the promises can be kept.
