it makes sense when you think about it: a diploma is a piece of paper that says you've been in a building with a lot of people, and a work recommendation is just another guy who might or might not be honest vouching for you. but a github with non-trivial commits for months/years is actual proof that you, as an individual, can produce work

go to a smaller company (50 or less people), they receive less CVs, are less sought after than multinationals or brand name tech company, and usually have only 1 hr person plus one lead dev or the cto looking at cvs. they dont have software to trim keywords so they will actually consider your cv for atleast a minute or 2. plus, if the company is good and the product too, they are in position of paying similar to bigger brands. the only caveat is that you have to compromise more to the team and the brand than in a big company where you can get by by being discrete
