How fucked am I if I said on a job apllication that I started my current job in June 2018, when in reality I started in December 2018, and I exaggerated about the length of my employment because I need to get out ASAP? It's my first job out of college and it's utter shit. I'm supposed to be an engineer and they have me working as a construction laborer. I'm negotiating salary for an offer, but I am worried about what they will say when the dates don't match up.

You are fine OP. You lied about dates? Not a big deal in all honesty, just make sure there is no way to trace you to your lie.

My current employer thinks I had a ton more experience in my last role than I had in actuality. People lie, its life. Just dont make it routine

Don't they do employment verification using public records?

Yep, they did. Even though I reported an incorrect title, I made sure the acronym lined up and came well prepared

as for your case, I don't think dates of departure are given, though I could be wrong...

How am I supposed to explain away a discrepancy claiming I've been at my only real job twice as long as I actually have?

Here is what you do: say you were contracted for the first half of the reported time you worked there, but you were "contracted" under a different company and were not earning sick time or PTO or benefits with your actual company. Thus this is why the dates dont match up. If they want the name of the contracting company, find one in the area but fudge it a bit and give them a Google number that you control

I lied on my resume and job application and all consequent paperwork that my last job I worked at was for a year and a half when it was really for 2 months.

I got hired and now work at a car dealership

I'm not sure if they'll buy that cover story. Honestly I never expected them to respond to my application.
