People really misunderstand what DJs even do. They mix songs together. That's basically it. You mix and match whatever stuff so the transition from song to song is smooth. If they didn't do that, the song would just end and the next song start from the beginning. There's quite a lot of nuances to doing that, but there isn't any reason for a DJ to be on a big stage doing that stuff, because it probably isn't very interesting to look at. Here's a DJ talking about this very thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3o6Ows9RfE

And here's another video just for reference of what the mixing looks like, you'll notice bits and specific sounds of the previous song still playing on top of the new one, where it becomes very seamless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izA0rd7QwVM

You realize any good DJ knows how to read a crowd and adjust his set?

>> No.13294488

>>13293410
lol, really?

Think about the basic elements of an individual track which can be affected with a mixer:
BPM
Highs
Mids
Lows
Vocals
Pitch
Key
Volume

Consider that highs/mids/lows are the simple way to break a track out (more or less) into the separate instruments that make it. And each of these channels is potentially subject to high-pass filters, low pass filters, & effects like reverb, echo (and > 1000+ other weird stuff) at a bare minimum. And all three channels simultaneously are subject to those modifiers as well as tempo.

Now consider that when mixing multiple tracks, of which competent DJ's will use up to 4 simultaneously, all of these elements on each track on each channel of the track need to be working harmoniously to create a decent mix.

This is the BARE MINIMUM capability of free DJ software and entry-level mixers, a professional rig will incorporate things like live MIDI and all of this can be routed through an infinite number of midi controllers like keyboards/synths & effects generators.

And your competence with exploring the infinite amount of possibilities on a single track, let alone 4 layered tracks, means nothing if you can't read a crowd and dynamically change the mood to take them on the journey they are looking for, without telling you what it is.

Being a good DJ takes a looooot of practice, and actually the most time you will spend is constantly digging searching for the right/fresh tunes and figuring out how they can be mixed, aside from working on your competency to dynamically change ordering when performing live. Being a shit DJ is as easy as making a playlist and fading one track into another, but nobody is going to pay you for those skills and nobody will be throwing wet panties at you at the end of your set unless you can do the rest of the things...

The short answer is by having lots of connections, just like everything else in the music industry. The replies saying kneepads are unironically the right answer.

I was at one point really hyped about being a DJ after watching a bunch of DJ Hero and DMC videos, but then I found out how you're basically fucked unless you're chad (like what >>13293258 said) and now it's something on the backburner after I finish some of my other personal projects. As far as techno goes, you can play any genre as long as it's electro house or whatever the shit is that Noisia plays nowadays. You might get lucky and find a "retro" club that plays something older and better, but by that point you already used up your luck for becoming successful, so it's really unlikely. Having said that, finding a club that plays old/niche shit might make things easier, but you'll never get deadmau5-tier playing things for a niche crowd as far as "success" is concerned. You might have a great time and really enjoy your life, but you'll always be small-time.

But then again, who doesn't want something nice on the eyes while they're getting fucked up and dancing in a nightclub?

And sure, making it bigtime as a DJ is a bit of a pipedream, but even being small time most definitely has it's rewards. Pussy on tap, free drugs on tap, everyone is (or wants to be) your friend, and it's pretty much the stepping stone to producing your own tunes which is one avenue into international touring. And that has much bigger rewards, like free entry and VIP treatment to all sorts of crazy festivals all over the planet.

It’s useless to become a dj unless you side with them and wanna see. Degeneracy and destruction, and if you does there are better paths
Let me start
First the frequency
The techno devices, software and hardware included are literally changed to use non natural patterns and frequency in order to literally make your brain a ramen
They literally changed all music devices resonance and frequency to a non harmonical and no natural one I. Order to literally brainwashing through sounds

Any device is corrupted any software corrupted and any hardware corrupted
So unless you use your own devices made from scratch using non usual patterns and material you are just empowering them

Also, all songs are literally copy paste of greek and Roman songs with 808 and other basses added, if you turn the song to a math equation you will see all of them (famous ones) have common patterns even sounding different

But if you want to fuck others and sell your soul go on

In what world, does one wet their toes in the world of DJing and production by STARTING with producing their own fucking tunes?

Not this one buddy. I know many producers and literally all of them started out by DJing first. There's a reason for that - DJing well is much, much easier than writing a good original tune. DJing first will give you a much better understanding of how to produce a tune that can actually be mixed well by other people as well. If you've never DJd and you go straight into production your tunes will have fucking hats that muddy the bassline and bass that seeps into your mids & highs because you have no appreciation of the limitations of a mixer and thus how to produce a tune that can actually be mixed on a live mixer.

And you "work in the industry". Yeah righto.

What do all the big name djs have in common? I bet they are either classically trained in piano or know how to play an instrument for actual song writing. The days of mixing records and making it in the biz are over. The sooner you realize that the sooner you can actually make a real attempt in the game. You wouldn't not believe how many music producer faggots learned how to dj in one day after their tracks gained traction and they got booked for a show. I don't care if you believe me faggot. I am giving real advice to anyone that wants be in the music biz.

I was never talking about "making it big" dickhead. I was saying that DJing WELL is not simple, and neither is producing a decent tune. Producing a decent original tune is still waaaaaay harder than DJing well. And you definitely won't produce a good original tune without first having a very in depth understanding of your material which is exactly what DJing gives you. So even in your fantasy if one were able to magically start producing bangers with fuck all experience DJing or depth of knowledge of your chosen genre, what the fuck are you going to do live? Just play your terribly produced tracks one after another while everyone leaves the dancefloor? What if the guy playing before you hops off and your suddenly sitting in front of a vinyl rig and you have 2000 screaming cookers expecting you to seamlessly mix your intro track on it in the next 20 fucking seconds and you've never mixed timecode or vinyl?

What is it exactly do you do "in the industry"? I'm guessing roadie or doing the shop run for the artist riders.

Keys generally come before starting producing but they don't have to. You just won't get far without picking it up. But that's a separate issue from your experience DJing, basically nobody starts producing without first having a fair bit of experience DJing.

Ah a tour manager. Which explains why you're an expert on music production. I see.

I agree nobody is going to start producing anything good in the first 5 years, as a rule, and no DJ will ever reach the success of a good producer. But saying to start producing tunes first is bad advice. Because it's HARD. And you will fail, over and over again. And you will give up, because you're not getting anything back for your hard work. If you can DJ first you can at least rock a party which will keep you motivated to work on the production side of things, and will help you produce better music too. That's why you start first with honing your music selection and taste so you have an individual style. Then you learn how to mix your flavour. Once you've got that down, then start dipping your toes into production. Foundations first. And if you happen to already know how to play keys or an instrument, your production efforts will be a lot more productive.

Best thing you can do is go to the parties and festivals and just talk to people. You never know who you will meet. One thing that you should know is that you need to be prepared for that moment that you actually meet someone with real clout. Have something to offer and do shit without them even asking. That is how you will make an impression and have them want to keep working with you.

No one said music production is easy anon. I have been djing for over 13 years and producing music for about 4. My music is not even close to being pro. DJing should be a second priory to anyone trying to be a DJ. Yes its backwards but that's how it is now. You time is more valuable in making music. You don't' need djing to know what genres you like. You can go to a party and see what works and what you like. Its the truth anon whether you like it or not.

And yet you yourself have 3 times as much experience DJing as production. Show me a producer that's recently made it big with less total time DJing than production, and I'll show you a prodigy/outlier. They exist, Clozee comes to mind, but she is also a classically trained musician who had successful acoustic releases well before she got into EDM & production. If you aren't a trained musician, going straight into production is most likely going to be a long, lonely and frustrating road.
