Absolute value. In the left of his chart (since the depth is positive) there a lot of buy orders open. The buyers were running out of steam (market depth goes negative) and that led people to short btc. A combination of tons of shorts on bitmex and thin order books made the perfect time for a short squeeze. Notice how the depth is way negative after the pump. That's because there is more resistance now and there are few buyers.
