Smart contracts can’t access real world data (because of consensus issues etc.) they need a source to deliver this data. The value proposition behind smart contracts is that they’re immutable, meaning unchangeable, can’t be forged etc. these smart contracts are secured by thousands of nodes (these nodes verify the ledger is accurate, this is why blockchain is slow, because it makes a trade off, that is, speed for trust/security). If a smart contract is executed using a centralized data point you might as well not use blockchain at all. This is where chainlink comes in and why Tom gonser got on board.
