First make an account on bitcointalk.org, look around in the different areas. Make an account on poloniex or yobit, deposit some of your coin there, and trade small amounts of shitcoin. You can see what all the different coins claim to do in the altcoin announcement section on BCT. Most of them don't actually do anything, some have a couple of uses, just pick ones you like, but also make sure they have some volume. Bitcrystals is a fun concept, and Rubies are interesting as well. I've personally got some BTC tied up into Gamecredits, too.

First you're going to want to download a wallet on your computer, I recommend Electrum for small amounts. Once you get that set up, send your Bitcoin from Coinbase to your wallet. From there you can send it anywhere. One you set up an account with an exchange, you are given a deposit address for every cryptocurrency they host (found either in a withdrawal/deposit tab or a wallets tab). You deposit the Bitcoin to the BTC deposit address, and once it is credited, you can place orders for whatever coin you want.

It's really confusing at first, and you'll probably lose most of your money, but emersing yourself in the operations is the best way to go about it.

It's really easy to get Bitcoin, so don't worry about losing it. If you set up an account on Bitcointalk and actively participate, your account will rank up over time. As your account ranks up, you can begin participating in giveaways and signature campaigns (basically you get paid to advertise in your signature). With my current account, I get paid .09 BTC every month, as long as I make 50 posts within that month. It's not a huge amount, but that's over a Bitcoin a year just for doing something I would be doing without the incentive.

If you have a skill, like coding, writing, translation, etc. there is plenty of freelance work to take up, too.

If you don't have free time or interest, none of this really applies, but if that's the case, you should invest more than $10.
