It really was inevitable.
By design, oracles are MEANT to be decentralized, that's how they reach off-chain consensus (and off-chain consensus is how they bring non-deterministic data to deterministic systems like blockchain).
So what Oraclize has been doing so far was a fun little experiment, but without truly decentralized/peer-to-peer oracles it would never have been more than that.

And what were they going to do, start building their own decentralized oracle network to directly rival Chainlink, who has been well-known as THE decentralized oracle project for the past two years?
Nobody would have taken that seriously.

So good on them, and good on CL.

Witnet might be the only actual competitor of chainlink, but even then they don'T even have a test net yet, while chainlink is closer and closer to mainnet. Rhombus is a literall who that won't even gather 1% of chainlink's node operators. And node operators and partnerships are absolutely everything in a decentralized oracle network, and we all know chainlink is a clear winner in that.

i agree, it's essentially an admission of defeat but honorable nonetheless. oraclize and chainlink have been the only serious contenders in this niche, with chainlink clearly offering a significant advantage. this is a tasteful way for them to bend the knee without completely sacrificing the work contributed to their own project

They want to make it just as we want to make it. The reality here is that every blockchain system that are liquid, not deemed a security, and decentralized have a legit use-case within the legacy systems and will spearhead mainstream use.

How do you get there? You must fetch off-chain data into smart contracts in a tamper-proof way in order to bring on the big boys like the derivatives market.

I'm ready. Get your ducks in a row ladies and gentlemen.

Right now, maybe. To a central point of failure/trust. For their ultra-low-value contracts.

If you think the derivatives market will one day incorporate smart contracts, $150MM is peanuts. Same for fixed income securities. Same for the as-yet unknown uses for trustless smart contracts. Why am i spoonfeeding?

Depends how much "making it" is to you. For me it's $10 million, although I can retire very comfily of $3m.
At this point link will hit $10-$50 just about guaranteed, I estimate $300 by 2022. S0 30k to make it by my standards, but NOBODY really knows like at all what the price will do.
