Is it worth it to change careers and learn a trade at 33 years old?

background:
wasted 1st quarter of my life on music... but technically inclined, doing some labour jobs too.

Quit music alltogether - learned to code at 29.

At 33yrs have developed circulation problems and hate my life sitting in front of a computer screen all day...

I've got lots of family working within a very large company who manufactures logging equipment. They tell me to get an engineering degree or learn a trade. I'll be 38 years old by the time i finish schooling...

This sounds dumb to me. but i dont make great decisions, like ask /biz/ for advice.... what do?

Chances that you hate all facets of being a lawyer is pretty slow so I'd recommend getting something which has good synergy with your current education.

Money/woman/family/children/friends/travel/deadendjob/etc. Go out and look for opportunity, thinking about what to do for the next 10 years will get you nothing. You need some soul searching, set up some goals, what this goals are may not be what they are in 10 years but you can adjust later. Set some goals, work towards them as hard as you can, fuck the rest.

Coding where you use "logical reasoning" only really happens anymore in startups where you'll have no job security and trash-tier benefits. Coding jobs at large companies where you can expect to get good benefits usually boil down to copying and pasting existing shit into a framework that the company hacked together, there will be very few times where you'll actually use proper logic.

I don't know about webdev because I specifically avoided going into that field, but I've heard that it's full of Tumblrinas, so there's that.

The bigger issue will be finding a job. All companies have by now figured out how to abuse the H-1B system, so for your job where you're just copying and pasting shit you'll have to compete with overseas hires who can do the same thing for cheaper because it's so easy and requires no critical thinking. Most places will not hire you unless you're book-smart. Forget actually learning to code, you're gonna have to follow the Indian school of thought and *memorize* how to code so that you can answer all the definition-based questions at your interviews because knowing how to answer googlable questions on the spot is worth more than solving coding problems somehow nowadays. This will probably work out for you guys since you're lawyers and used to memorizing things, but a lot of people that learned coding as a hobby are struggling right now because no one is looking for people who can code anymore since frameworks have already done the job for most companies. I went on /g/ the other day and there was a job thread that read like a doomer thread.

look the thing is once you learned a new job in x years you will just notice that the job will be either gone to automation or will be sooner or later. we live in a time shortly before the singularity (will happen in the next 20 years) after that the world as we know it today will be gone. and so will be 99.9% of all jobs (and no it wont create "new jobs")

I'm a finance major and I'm constantly depressed. I hate my major so much. I can't see myself doing this shit. I've been in and out of school for about 6 years now and nowhere near being done. I thought about just dropping out and learning how to do web dev. I hope this works out for me. I've switched majors like 3 times already. The only job I've had is as a waiter. webdev is pretty terrible. you spend most of your time screwing around with needlessly complicated frameworks, writing in terrible languages like Javascript, and fiddling with HTML bullshit. Once (or if) you get a family - wife, kids. You will no longer have the option to go down in pay to pursuit another career, you will be trapped in your current occupation for the rest of your life.

The Life expectancy for a 33 yo in a western country is +80. Treatment options and medicin in general, means you will spend the 90% of these remaining years healthy, furthermore the government is constantly moving up retirement age.. what you are looking forward to, is 40 more years on the job market.

When you are working with something you find interesting, your job doesn't feel as much of a job, you don't hate mondays to the same extend as you would do if you have a job you "hate".
Your interest also have a positive affect on your career and you productivity. You have an easier time learning new things - if you like it and are motivated about it. you'll have an easier time going the "extra mile" and getting into a more well-paid position.

In short, don't listen to the boomers, you need to find a job where you have some passion for it, that catch your attention and continuously motivate you.

I wanted to make the switch from marketing copy writing to coding but I ended up failing at that and using the front end skills to get a job as an accessibility specialist so now I have a job advising on meeting WCAG 2.0 guidelines working entirely remotely for a company. It's a growing field that doesn't require nearly the amount of work actually learning to code does.

Honestly I do get a lot of satisfaction solving actual tangible problems at work and seeing them get realized but a grindstone is a grindstone and engineers can get kicked around a lot. You've gotta have an autistic streak and I mean that in the best way possible, like an unironic "oh boy I've been auditing this data manually for three weeks I can't wait to stay late and query it!" kind of way. I am 29 studying for my builders qualification. I first started working 3 years ago and about one year in, i started working with a guy we will call mike. Mike spent 10 years messing with music and was working dead end retail jobs but he wasnt really the type to care about money nevertheless. I was a bit more experienced than him, and would generally show him how to use power tools and whatnot, it was difficult at first for him, he suffered to a certain degree but not without purpose in the end. After working for 1.5 years he became highly proficient in carpentry and general building work, he said he enjoyed carpentry the most and would watch videos in his spare time and tell me about the things and tricks he learned from videos. Later on, he enrolled in a trade school and started working with a team of carpenters.

Point of this story is anon, that my friend was 35 years old when we started together, and he would have never had thought he would have become a carpenter. But just because he was living next to the jobsite we were working on, had a good attitude and was willing to do labor work, led him to a career path to which he had no natural ability or proclivity towards.

Although he was somewhat nihlistic at the beginning he later developed a passion for carpentry and his outlook changed. Its never too late anon. You must be prepared to suffer however, it wont be for long, and it will be worth it for whatever trade you decide on.
