Hey options fags..

I've officially dipped my toe into this new world, and want some thoughts/advice on my first option. So I have pic related, grabbed it up 2 days ago for shits and giggles as a way to learn. I'm wondering if I should sell if it's still up in the morning, or let it go until the expiration and see what happens. My concern is that Monday buying+warm fuzzies from US/China trade talks will kill it and bring it back up. I'm leaning towards letting it go on, whicj brings me to my 3 next questions.

Here's a graph of your profit/loss over time. Just looking at it quickly unless you expect AAPL to drop below 173 in the next day or 169 before the 8th I'd sell it and take profts. You can make these charts for free on optionsprofitcalculator, its crazy to try and do options without bare minimum doing that. It expires at 4pm on friday the 8th btw.

that is what the tens of millions of people who work in finance do all day
when people buy and sell options on stocks they are considering a lot of things. some people on either side of buys/sells aren't considering very much.

but systemic trading strategies like the one that you brought up generally won't generate alpha for you. in this case the implied volatility is 'roughly' priced in.
if you think it is a good strategy you can backtest it or papertrade it forward to find out.

just remember that there are also time effects to things being 'priced in', and that some times 'the wrong things' can be priced in.

but most questions that take the form of the one that you asked can be answered with market forces deciding prices.

a good way to learn about how prices form is to ask what things are priced in, and how are they priced in
'value'

Alpha is supposed to be the disparity between the fair market value and the actually price of a security.

If you have the capital, can’t you just buy calls with break evens lower than the current share price and immediately execute them and sell those shares?
Like I’m eying SOXL (at 130 rn) calls at 79 for $4,800. Break even is 126. It would cost around 12700 to buy and execute that option but I can immediately sell at market price for 13000.

Market price isn't always in line with B/A spread, because the average/midpoint of the highest B/A is the market "price." Generally if your order is closer to the MP and small enough some big trader or the like will move the price to eat your order. Happened some times when I put orders/had stops triggered though that might be more of a RH thing.
