Here's an example of uncontrolled blockchain growth and how it goes bad quickly.

They pay the block producers who don't even prove cryptographically that they have the full history.

They're hitting the losing the full history problem. Something that already happened to Ripple.

The problem with UTXO commitments as a solution to not synchronizing from Genesis is that a miner could cheat and add UTXOs.

Indeed we saw this attack on BTCP (Bitcoin Private), which was discovered only months later when it was too late.

We don't have a currently better solution than small blocks and synching from Genesis to get the same low trust model we have come to love about Bitcoin.
