You make your own trading decisions edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

high dividend paying shares are high for a few reasons:

1. The stock is down significantly. That's usually a bad thing when the stock is down so far that its dividend is so high (see F). The dividend may be cut due to better uses for the cash in the company.

2. The dividend might be high but the dividend payments may not be increasing and continuous. There's certain companies that pay 10%+ dividends, but most are risky MLPs, CEFs or high volatile REITs

As a dividendbro, to live off dividends in the future you'll want to focus in part on dividend kings and aristocrats, but have most your focus on dividend growth also known as CAGR. Basically high dividend growth = company is doing well but also it increases your yield on cost and giving you more money for not adding any new capital. the increases over several stocks can be the equivalent of investing $10-15K per year in new capital that would be necessary to get the amount of new dividends at current yields.

To live off dividends you'll need to earn and save a lot more than $55K. You'll want at least $1.5M to live somewhat comfortably (you won't need to save that much due to compounding interest, but the more you save earlier, the easier it will get to reach that number).

DCA your $55K in to quality, dividend growth stocks (see ITW, MSFT, AAPL, CSCO, SBUX), standard dividend staples (LOW, MO, KHC, KO, JNJ, PG), some REITs (O, IRM, DOC), and some good yielding stocks like telecoms (T and VZ).

All above stocks I own. There's also some decent utilities like ED, ENB and SO, but I haven't gotten into that sector yet.

Phone sales are still decreasing and this trend isnt going to reverse. Once you lose that intangible cool and superior factor there's no getting it back, and they've been coasting on that factor for well over five years now with inferior products and it finally caught up to them. Nobody will use their services if they're no longer using their products. Apple can't innovate and are getting left behind. The main reason for their delisting was because of market capitlization was below 50million.. If it was simply because it's below $1 they could've easily done a reverse split.. that wasn't the case.

They needed more share holder equity.. one thing they couldve done is do a private offering of common units as to not disturb the float... but they probably couldn't find anyone willing to throw 20 million at it.

Can someone explain how options work to me? I think I'm missing something blinding obvious.
Right now, let's use GALT since it's being shilled right now.

At the bottom, there's a strike price of $1, meaning that I would buy the shares at one dollar a piece, of what I'm assuming is the standard 100 set of shares. And it says the premium is $4.50.
There is another selection there which has the strike price of $8, to use the other extreme here, and the premium price is $0.13

1. Is the premium price is per singular share?
2. Either way, what possible reason would I want to have a higher strike price? This feels like something -really- obvious that I'm just completely blind to.
I hope I'm getting my question across properly.

holy shit WIN and WIN bondholders BTFO

"We take no pleasure in Windstream's resulting financial predicament. Windstream could easily have averted it – first by not playing fast and loose with its noteholders in 2015, hoping nobody would hold the company to account, and second by settling. Instead, Windstream wasted an exorbitant amount – more than would have been needed to settle with us at the time – on an ineffective exchange offer and then on litigation.

In our view, a management and a board with an extreme and unwarranted assessment of Windstream's legal case chose to bet the company. The company lost.

According to its statement last Friday, Windstream now intends to appeal. This is welcome news for our fund, as it will require Windstream to post a surety bond exceeding $300 million. That surety bond will pay in full the notes our fund owns when Windstream loses the appeal. We are happy to take the surety company's credit over Windstream's.

To noteholders who chose to play the company's game even after it had broken its promise, we wish you luck with your exchange notes. Between their dubious status and their OID risk in bankruptcy, we suspect you will need it."

I guess what I'm asking is, if the total cost = strike + premium, and if tc > s+p you profit, why would you possibly buy the $8 option there.
$8 strike + 0.13 premium = 8.13 total cost per share
$1 strike + 4.5 premium = 5.5 total cost per share.

If you sell at a high price, for this sake let's use a price point of 10 dollars, well above everything else.
Would you not make more on the $1 option?
price point $10 - ($1s + $4.5p) = $4.5 profit
price point $10 - ($8s + $0.13p) = $1.87 profit.

Or am I fundamentally misunderstanding something?

I'm pretty cynical and didn't think of it like that, but it's so true. The forms all say something like "this was furnished to the IRS". I take some sort of pride in doing my own taxes though. I do corporate tax for a living and honestly wouldn't completely trust one of the chain branches that are all over. The people in those have the minimum training and the burden of supplying all of the information is on the customer anyway. Aside from triple checking investment activity, personal taxes aren't that hard, especially for people who have an interest in finance, like in this thread.

"Modern Monetary Theory"

it goes like this:

the government controls the currency, all that shit about the Federal Reserve not being a branch of the government is a silly conspiracy theory

so the debt isn't real, it's just the fed and the treasury pretending to owe each other money

so the government can just issue more currency to buy whatever it wants

taxes don't raise money, because as we've just demonstrated, the money doesn't need to be raised, the government controls it. taxes just control inflation

now, all of these are basically true statements, from a certain point of view. problem is, the whole "act like the national debt is real" thing acts as a sort of control rod in the nuclear reactor of the economy.

problem comes when a True Believer gets elected, all of a sudden its time to spend whatever you want to spend on universal health care and basic income. (or if it's a right wing True Believer, on the military, whatever. right wingers aren't currently into heterodox economic policy, but who knows, could change).

raising taxes on everybody, right after you told everybody that you don't need taxes to pay for things, isn't politically tenable, so you get runaway hyperinflation.

I was in apha during the last bullrush and cashed out at 10. Took the profits and bought ACB, since it started climbing the latest I figured that it would last longer than the others, and I'd read articles saying it was undervalued and oversold/had the most potential in general.

Okay, chart isn't terrible on this one. Pic related is muh TA. Prices are in Canadian but the pattern is identical. Medium term falling trend puts resistance at $10, same price it initially rejected back in January. Rising channel remains intact for the time being. First support is $8.83 (the February 12th low). Second and more critical support is ~$8.17, the average lows on Jan 18, 22-24.

If I were holding ACB I would place a conservative stop just below $8.17. More aggressive stop would be just below $8.83. Just depends on how much wiggle room you feel comfortable allowing the price to move. Major thing to watch out for is another rise to $10, bounce down, break support. If that happens it's a head & shoulders as well as a violation of support, therefore strong bearish signal. If it blows past $10, that would be an early sign of possible technical bullish breakout, and good news for more gains to follow.
