I'm trying to get a research internship or part-time job (preferably physics but id be cool with engineering) but it's so fucking frustrating.
>be 18
>almost completed my second year of college
>still no high school diploma bc early college program
This makes me ineligible for like 99% of jobs from the start. What do I do?

You are lucky because rarely is the solution to a problem so obvious: get your fucking high school diploma.

If you couldn't figure that one out you'll struggle with doing any kind of real problem-solving in research. But I digress. You also have a second alternative: given that you are the type of autist that enrols in college early how about you just go talk directly with some professors and see if they can just write you in a project. Surely you know someone there.

The point of me posting this is because I won't get my high school diploma for the rest of the year but I need money now

And I've spoken to every professor in the department, NONE of them are doing research (fucking astounding) except for one who might be, I'm talking with him tomorrow, but I highly doubt it.

i already have a job but im not making enough money. i really need money for a car bc mine is about to irreparably break down. i need like a legit job and if i could get a part-time 3-4 days a week internship. my current job is dogshit and they keep cutting everyone's hours bc low sales
>>12803708
if i got my diploma, the state wouldnt be paying for my college

An internship wouldn’t be paying you any more than a part time job. Just look for open retail positions and work hours when the store is empty.

>> No.12803761

>>12803737
it's more about hours and value for my time.
I wouldn't mind working minimum wage, so long as i can a) work more hours and b) have that work be related to my intended career so it isn't a complete waste of time
I will look for retail positions, ive only ever worked in food which sucks, but ideally id like to get something related to physics (im not picky, ill take anything STEM related) even if its just getting coffee for the actual scientists

you're most likely out of luck since you are 18 and still enrolled in high school. I'm curious though, what are you planning to major in?

Physics, hopefully going to get involved in research ASAP (freshman year if I can get into Duke, fingers crossed) then work a job that'll subsidize my grad school (most likely R&D) and eventually, once I get enough experience, do pure research full time. I feel like this is a pretty reasonable career path, and it's definitely within my capabilities, but I can't get my goddamn foot in a single door.

uhhh, you should've applied last summer if you are graduating this year. You better have a stellar gpa and really good extracurriculars. I looked up their average gpa for freshman students , and its 4.08!

>> No.12803956

>>12803901
thats not really how that works, you apply during the school year, with october/early november being early application and january being regular application (i did regular bc early is binding for duke)
here are some stats for ya:
>1500 SAT
>35 ACT
>4.7 (max 5.0) W, 4.0 (max 4.0) UW GPA
Letter of recommendation from a close family friend who went to Duke undergrad and medical school
Strong extracurriculars but not super STEM related bc there isnt a lot STEM related around here. Mainly music, theater, and community service related. I have a whole resume with everything I've done, and I hope that that would suffice for legit companies I try to intern with, but so far that hasnt worked

Don't mind the boomers so much. Actively working more than 40 hours per week is pointless, unless you're aiming for 1b+ net worth or something world-changing AND you've got a really good roadmap that you prepared based on your own insights (no brainlet-level internet cheatsheeting)
Anyway, this is just a humble brag thread even if you don't realize it. Carry on.

fair, it wasnt intended as one and it didnt start that way but it kind of devolved into that, thats my bad
the hours of work is in reference to school, all-nighters arent uncommon, sometimes consecutively. the whole "crazy hypercompetitive chinese high school makes kids kill themselves before exams" thing is spreading to the US now too, so thats fun
