we're talking about just the fed. If the fed was gone or was a minimal 'glue' for the states, your own state would regulate it's own airspace. Military except the coast guard is still on pay as of today (and is ever expanding). national parks are a historical wart. when they were established, local jurisdictions in the candidate protection areas did not have any resources to accomplish the necessary tasks. NPS creation could easily be repealed and replaced by the local government in each state in present day US.

That's fantastic, but it sure doesn't help the brand new kids coming out of bootcamp last week who still haven't received their first paycheck from the military. It's absolutely fucking pathetic that I have to go into work and explain to them in their first week that their Commander-in-Chief, the highest ranking official in their chain of command, has failed to find a solution to pay them. I then have to explain to them how to get a loan without getting butt fucked. These mother fuckers joined the military with nothing but good intentions, and for what? Not getting paid? Not to mention the complete shutdown of all training at the moment. Boats and Helos are launched daily for training exercises, and it's actually extremely important, especially during the winter months when there isn't as much Search and Rescue to be done. We are constantly training, but as of right now, we have no money for fuel for training. Training centers are also shut down. All E-3s must undergo specific schooling in order to advance to E-4, and that has been completely stopped. Some of those E-3s have been waiting 2-3+ years to get to their training. The Coast Guard is also extremely short handed at the moment, with retention rates and moral at an all time low. Due to this shutdown, to my knowledge, all new bootcamp companies have been delayed and no new recruits are being allowed in. Our unofficial motto has always been "Do more with less", but now it's "Do all with nothing".

local governments have been shown to be untrustworthy in this regard. Almost every state with a national park wants to sell some of it to oil and mining interests due to corruption on the local scale. Honestly, we need a public trust running on a distributed blockchain system where people can pick up trash, maintain trails, etc. and get paid or credit for their contribution (pay a deposit to camp, get your deposit returned based on contribution). You could have a small policing force of rangers who get paid out of this fund to prevent degradation, using automated surveillance to charge anyone for vandalism in the highly-trafficked areas. Stop shilling this false dichotomy between public / private sector.
Private companies can compete with public services if they want, and they do. Look at FedEx and UPS for example.
The only reason why anyone argues for a traditionally public service moved over to the private sector is for greed and ripping off taxpayers through shoddy, inferior service.

They could strike a happy medium though. Private sector can often get away with paying their lower level employees much less than government employees earn. The problem is that the differential is absorbed at the top by the CEOs and upper management.

If government passed certain regulations that prohibited executives from earning certain multipliers in relation to the day-to-day grunts, it could go a long way at establishing a perfect equilibrium.

Essentially have a more strongly regulated private sector in areas that impact normal public/utility-type services.

I don't begrudge my lot in life. I work hard (provide value to the classes above me) and feed my kin. I'm the lower class you should want to multiply; not the parasites.

You hate those under you collecting from the government because you're scared you might become one too.
You think that it's their existence slowly pulling you down to their level because you're familiar with them and shop at the same stores as them. You're unaware that it's those faceless lords above you that are pushing you down to their level.

Every society in history that's allowed the captains of industry to assert their greedy and selfish will on the population at large without paying their "riot insurance" has eventually succumbed to revolution.

100% fact my friend, and those are the people who are above me currently. These are the E-7+ and O-5+. More junior ranks are not the same, and are much more educated and intelligent. It amazes me how big of a difference there is between the brand new boots and the old guys. 2001 was 18 years ago, so the people joining today were barely alive during 9/11. Most of the kids joining today just want to go to college, and are pretty decent human beings. 18 years can make a big difference in the military, I'm sure you know that.

People who support trump will support him no matter what he does. He could open the border and grant all immigrants citizenship and his base would say it's a good move that will support the economy by allowing business to pay lower wages for labor jobs. He could instate a single-payer health care system and his base would say it's a good move because grandma no longer has to rely on the lord to save her through a miracle. He could require all children to be vaccinated and his base would suddenly turn around and say vaccinations are a gift from god, while somehow still disagreeing with modern medical science. Remember that Trump supporters are statistically less educated than other citizens in our country, which just goes to show how poor our education system truly is.

two points:
1) What do we do about single moms, widows, etc? An able-bodied man between ages 21-54 has literally no excuse not to be working for a wage, but you can't (or shouldn't?) really expect the same of women.
2) What do you think the purpose of education is? To train high-school graduates for a job? To develop a cultured and educated population? To push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and artistic talent?
All three of those educational principles seem essential to the modern state (we're not running a sweatshop, we want a refined polity). Do we fund them or not?
