That means you need to think about what employers want: someone productive that optimize their net marginal benefit.

Take steps to become more productive (i.e better at whatever you do) and if relevant prepare adequately for interviews. The more appealing you become (i.e the better you are) the more the power relationship goes in your favor (because you can switch jobs easily and also deliver high added value to the corp).

Basically the best advice I can give you is to start thinking about the economics of all of this. The guy with hiring decision power has someone above him that will look at his quarter results and decide their future. They want to meet their targets for the quarter. Will you help them do that or drag the whole team?

>have to work in HVAC sales for 50k/year for 3 years with promise of commission in the future

>find job as operating engineer at supermarket distribution center

>now work 3 or 4 12 hour shifts a week for $36/hour
>overtime is handed out like candy
>Sundays holidays and anything over 40 hours in the week is 1.5x pay
>my job is to write down numbers from gauges all day
