I graduated from university last year and got a full time job, then started investing in mutual funds. I've been investing $250 a week for about 6 months now, and my returns are currently $-885 (I know mutual funds are more of a long-term game). But I haven't been putting any money aside as savings. Is this risky? I was thinking I might start putting away $100 a week into a savings account, is this a poor balance between investing and saving?

As long as you keep fees as low as possible and consistently buy more youll be fine in the long term. Not very many people have the discipline to beat the market, so you on the right track.

Of course this assumes you wont be touching that money for 20+ years. If you are looking to start a business or something, do not invest in stocks.

While its pretty likely we'll be heading into a recession soon, it's not a given. OP is better off just dollar cost averaging. He probably doesnt have the necessary skills to follow through with a long term investment strategy. I would even argue that most professional managers lack these skills too. Agency problems certainly dont help either.

no, he has a fantastic opportunity here
buy gold, hold through the incoming cataclysmic recession ( explosion of the $22 trillion US debt bubble)
take gold profits into buying indexes and hold long term

after a 14 year bear market? dont think so bro
towards the end of the 80s, was clear USSR was collapsing and US would reign supreme as the sole superpower
advent of the internet, in addition to japans irrelevance due to its debt bubble imploding, set the stage for the US and western europe to see a huge rise in stock prices/general economic progress

I don't plan on touching the investments for around 10 years, it will most likely be used for a down payment on a house.
