Body with organs all over the sidewalk edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

it is actually funny when people compare warren buffet's return they most often compare berkshire stock performance vs. sp500, which is good, but dont realize berkshire's actual portfolio is taking the beating by sp500 by a landslide! so there is either buffet premium or simply people think brk stock equals their portfolio =)

In 2011, Berkshire’s portfolio return was 4%. (The S&P 500 was up 2.1%.)

In 2012, Berkshire’s portfolio return was 15.7%. (The S&P 500 was up 16%.)

In 2013, Berkshire’s portfolio was up 13.6%. (The S&P 500 was up 32.4%.)

I have now just over a year's time in my employer's 401k. I've been investing in the offered stock index investment products (all mutual funds) and company stock funds, but I have only been receiving dividends on the company stock funds. Is this normal? Do the lack of dividend payouts help make the mutual fund prices go up? I have the opportunity to open a self-directed brokerage account with TD Ameritrade and I am thinking of going that route with 90% of my contributions since they offer many commission free ETFS (including many SPDR funds) and there's no extra fees to open one.

that depends on the specifics of the mutual fund. for example, they might automatically DRIP the dividends to buy more underlying shares instead of passing them on to you. really, what you should look at is expense ratios of the funds, anything approaching 1% is atrocious

You want to find Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab index funds that have 0.04% or something similar expense ratios. Ignore the meme "IN 10 YEAR SPAN THIS FUND MADE 22%! !" Financial companies cherrypick the winners and present them to people--the company very likely had several (hundred even) that didn't beat the market. Plus, just because they might have beaten the market during one ten-year period doesn't mean they'll always beat the market.

If you have available a US total market index fund with low expense ratios, jump on that. My 401k only has a Vanguard S&P 500 fund, but it's better than the absolute dogshit other options.

Yes, that's entirely fine. You could diversify a tad and split it between Dow/S&P/Nasdaq ETFs if you wish according to your feel about the primary market movers (the individual companies) of the day for each index. The general idea is, as anons have already mentioned, pick a popular ETF with low expense ratio and reasonable dividend.

roth vs trad is tricky, it depends on (current marginal tax rate) - (expected marginal tax rate when you withdraw / retire)

>> No.12392709

>>12392611
if you put money into a traditional 401k or traditional IRA, you pay taxes on any money you pull out as if it was income. for example if you take out $40k per year, the IRS thinks you took out $40k per year as income and you pay taxes on that money. however, you dont pay any taxes when you put money you put in (hence 401ks are often called "tax-deferred" accounts)

roth is a little diffrent. with roth, you pay taxes up front but when you take money out, you dont pay any taxes at all.

I was also a little wrong earlier, the formula that matters is
> (current marginal tax rate) - (expected total tax rate (not marginal rate) when you withdraw)

>> No.12392759

>>12392709
so if you currently make less a year than you think you will want to use in retirement, go ROTH

otherwise if your currently rich and will spend less in the future when your older, go traditional

>> No.12392793

>>12392759
that's the basics yes
however, taxes might go up or down in the future, many people think they may go up and that tilts it towards roth
but also its not just your total income, its your marginal taxes that matter when you put money in but the total taxes when you take money out. for example at $40k your marginal tax rate is 22% but when you withdraw $40k your total tax rate is only like 14% so that titls it towards traditional
also due to the time value of money, its better to defer taxes than to front load them due to compound intrest which also tilts it towards traditional
so rith vs trad is a bit more complicated

>> No.12392802

this, when I was 20 I opened a roth, now I just defer the tax up front and put contributions in a traditional ira. Its part of the reason I really hate anybody who wants to raise taxes.

it says at age 22 if i want to retire at 42 making 40k currently and maxing 5500 annually that traditional will be 254k~ and roth at 241k~

but this is 'best case scenario' in essence yes? assuming taxes dont go up (which seems much more likely than going down long term) ? Even if traditinonal looks better now, isnt the 'guarantee' no taxes of ROTH worth something to someone in retirement, in that wahtever tax bracket they would be in then doesnt even matter?

so I ran the fast Fourier transformation on my data for inflation adjusted stock prices and got this graph. If it has any meaning at all, it seems that only extremely short waves and extremely long waves have any impact at all. Although, take the short wave thing with a grain of salt, apparently there's some messiness when you do with with a time domain where the waves aren't centered around zero which results in an initial spike.

I should also note that when you look at stock data when adjusted for inflation there is a big qualitative change when we hit the 90s. This qualitative change actually occurs in a lot of economic data besides stock price, including global levels of FDI. A couple explanations include the culmination of globalization and the industrialization of China, the opening up of 2nd world markets in general, and rising accumulation in the neoliberal period going into increasingly complex and risky investment vehicles. Also, tech innovation like the internet and the mobile phone took off around that point.

Someone more knowledgeable with calculus could probably handle this far better than I.

Yes. VTSMX is available at $3,000 min, and you can store money in there until you hit $10,000. Only difference between VTSMX and VTSAX is the expense ratio is slightly higher (0.15~ vs 0.04~ IIRC).

>>12392455
Have you evaluated your tax situation? If you're able to save $2000/mo and max out your 401k, you probably make quite a bit of money. Shaving $19,000 off your income for tax purposes might be better than Roth.

and yeah personally im looking to max my ROTHs with VTSMX until i have 2 maxed when i will have $10k then i go convert it to VTSAX when my ROTH balances are combined right? I've never used Vanguard or a ROTH before, just starting investing

You can contribute 5500 (might be 6000 now?) per year to a Roth account max. Once the total in VTSMX hits 10k it should automatically convert to VTSAX, no input needed on your part.

So in year 2 when you can put in enough to reach 10k it will convert.

Also, try to get a job with a 401k or equivalent (457, 403, etc.). They're such game changers that it should be a crucial factor at where one work, provided you have the ability to max it out.

I've considered trying a side hustle and creating a company for that hustle solely to put all the proceeds into a 401k created by that company (self-401k from side business isn't governed by the same $19,000 max at your main job). Shit is so rigged if you know how to (and can) game it.

Could i get a part time job elsewhere during the day and literally put 100% of my income into that 401k, because there are some part time jobs with those for sure. There are lots of things I like to do too, but Im not sure I could turn any of them into a genuine income generating side hustle.

What do you mean tax advantaged options?? I have eTrade and robinhood. Etrade is my main..

The only tax advantage you have is being a long investor, where you pay capital gains tax of 15% for holding over a year vs. 33% selling after holding under a year on gains...

Also a lot depend on your tax bracket as well.
