...had some crypto and, eventually, he told me what he held. Most of his bitcoin was in some kind of scam-sounding fund which GUARANTEED a 50% return every month. He insisted that he had been genuinely receiving this amount each month for a little while already.

I said he was talking complete shit. He also held some absolute "who?" scam alt as well, so I don't think he knew what he was doing. And he said BTC to 60k EOLY.
